I don't get the joke -- I guess this is a reference to some other series?

But I do remember once in UY where this idea was discussed. (In the Viz
translation; the original Japanese may have been different for all I know.)
Ataru said "I shoulda been a girl!". His mom replied something like "That would
have been awful! With your looks we'd never have been able to get rid of you!"
