a fire thats been set by humans (Ranma and his wolf pack are elves in case
you are wondering) they seek refuge with a local group of trolls then they
winder into a dessert and meet the dessert elves Akane enters the picture at
this point in Leeta's role of the villages healer which Ranma recognizes.
Read the Elfquest Hardcover books to get a better idea of whats to happen in
the fic

Drat. I would be in the middle of three stories already when you come up
with this idea.  It all fits, especially the first book: A brash youth
"Recognizes" a headstrong girl who wishes to have absolutely nothing to do
with him.  Ryoga is a natural for Rayek.
