I will be out of the office until February 18, 1997.

I've been getting those messages, too, every time I send something to
the list itself. Here's my theory:

Thomas Schauer is subscribed to the list. Now Mr. Schauer decides
that he has to leave the office for a while. Being a government worker (I'm
guessing this from the e-mail addy), the e-mails he gets are probably
somewhat important, important enough that he feels people should know if
he's out of the office. So, Mr. Schauer automates his e-mail application
to automatically send "I will be out of..." messages to everyone who
sends him mail.

The posts he gets from the list triggers his e-mail program to send
his automated message to the poster, since that's the address in the
"From:" field. So, everytime someone posts to the list, he/she gets that
annoying message (I'm expecting one after I send this).

Since Feb. 18 is already over, we can assume that Schauer forgot to
turn off his program, and probably won't anytime soon. So, the only
alternative is to forcibly unsubscribe him to remove this nuisance. I
would suggest doing so, but what do I know?
