7.  To become a Star Fleet officer, all Picard had to do was pass an
exam. To become a Jedi Knight, Luke had to get his ass kicked all over
the place by first his dad, then a guy who shoots lightening bolts out
of his fingers..

I know this is nitpicking, but wasn't Luke ALREADY a Jedi Knight when he
faced the emperor?

Nope.  Luke had run out on his training in SW:ESB when he sense Han
and Leia in danger.  Later, in SW:RotJ, Yoda told him that he had all
the training needed but that he still had to face Vader yet again before 
becoming a full Jedi Knight.  Obviously, Yoda was assigning Luke's final
test.  It wasn't a matter of whether or not Luke could beat his father but
rather a test of both his physical and mental control.
