Hmmm.  The reason I suggested this is because the "listening" and
"starting" activities happened at a time before he wondered about
it and thus should be set in an earlier tense.

I can understand that.  One of my prereaders tends to "correct" me
when I use British English in my fics.  I can't help it - It's
what I learned in school.  :)
