Well, here's what I've done:
I used to respond to every piece of email I got. That ended up taking
up way too much of my time. I'd rather spend my time writing stories.

So I eventually degraded to only writing back when I needed
clarification of a particular piece of C&C.
I almost developed a form letter to send to people who sent me C&C. I
ended up writing almost the same thing anyway. I stopped myself,
though. It seemed so impersonal.
Then again, silence can be impersonal.
So which would you prefer, Bert? Let's start from the assumption that,
unfortunately, I don't have the time to respond personally to each email
I get. I mean, I got 30 responses to "Transitions", some of them quite
emotional. If I spent 20 to 30 minutes composing a response to each of
those messages... well, you can see what would happen to my time.
Would you prefer a form response, something that doesn't touch
specifically on what you write? Or silence?
Anyone else who wants to comment, let me know.
Personally, I hate form responses, but if silence is worse, I'll take
the lesser of evils.
Either way, I want people to know that I really, really appreciate your
responses. The feedback to "Transitions" has been quite touching, and
has meant a lot to me.
