Heinlein did something like that in The Number of the Beast. A good read,
especialy if you like crossovers.
Although it does help to have read a resonable proportion of of his previous
works to catch all the cross references. The number of the universes is
6^6^6 (six to the power of six to the power of six). Of course they didn't
have to worry about and "void" travelling -_o They just rotated.
