It comes out that Nodoka has some kind of treasure in the family shrine.

It's a medal, won by one of the Saotome ancestors during (what else?) a
martial arts tournament. BTW, it wasn't a shrine, it was the Saotome
family grave (booby-trapped by the previous Saotomes.)

Genma makes multiple efforts to steal it, proving beyond any doubt what
a reprehensibly selfish person he is.

In the process, Genma first uses the threat of the promise and Ranma's
curse to keep Ranma from interfering; however, after a certain point is
reached Ranma decides that his mother deserves to know the truth. Genma
attempts, despite Nodoka's growing suspicions, to prevent Nodoka
learning the truth; this eventually ends with Genma accidentally hurling
Nodoka off a high oceanside cliff.

This happened because he was carrying Nodoka and trying to escape from
Ranma (male) while running into rivers, onsen, and waterfalls. In the
end, he crashes into a tree and Nodoka goes flying.
 

Ranma leaps after her, and manages to
catch her and use her katana as a landing post before they land on the
rocks below. Genma then tries- again- to snag the treasure,

Actually, when he crashed into the tree the treasure fell into his
hands. When he went down to the chasm it was to prevent Ranma from
telling Nodoka who "Ranko" really was. Ranma realized that Nodoka was
*VERY HAPPY* to see him again and decided not to spoil the occasion.

and ends up
dunking all three in the drink.

That's because the rope he was hanging on broke and the katana simply
slid off its scabbard.

Nodoka, apparently, states that her son
is an excellent man, even when he's a woman...

Pushing Ranma's ego up by one notch...

and Genma escapes with
the treasure, which (as far as I can tell from the picture) is a piece
of paper with Ranma's name on it.

Actually, Genma had taken the "treasure" to a pawn shop. When the shop's
clerk opened the box, he found... a pawn shop receipt. Apparently,
Genma's ancestors had already sold the medal.

Nodoka then insists on Ranma buying something for Akane, which triggers
the standard 'fiancee melee'

It isn't "buying." She gives him a small curved box, the kind that
usually holds rings... She tells him to give it to Akane, because it
will soon serve her as well as it served her. The other fianc�es find
out, of course. But when Akane eventually gets the box, she pulls the
"ring" and discovers that it was actually a case for medicine --aspirin
and pain relievers-- and that the ring was only its lid. Nodoka later
explains that the women of the Saotome clan face great pain, and that
those aspirins would help Akane put up with Ranma. BTW, it's because of
this misunderstanding that Kodachi, Shampoo and Ukyou totally DESTROY
the Saotome house, and the Saotomes have to freeload at the Tendo's
again.

It is to notice that this was the last major story arc before the
arrival of the Mount Phoenix warriors.
