I believe he died during that training exercise.  Or to make it more
interesting, Ranma was completely taken on the cat persona therefore Genma
dropped him to Nodoka or to someone to look Ranma after.  Then Genma
proceeded to go ahead with the plan of marrying Ukyou with a Tendo;  until
such time that Ranma is back to normal.

This story is getting good so far.
