This probably will never be sent to RAAC (and certainly not in
anything like its present form) but here, for anyone interested is part of an
e-mail I sent a while ago to Hitomi which details Zhuranovsky's and Fellini's
part in the DA project history. It has no real relevance as such to DC and
would need a *great* deal of work before it could be turned into a story in
its own right. Still, I thought I might as well send it since it exists. ^_^

Zhuranovsky, Fellini and the DA project history.
There was no rivalry between Zhuranovsky and Fellini (they were the
closest of friends) before the creation of the DA project. Quincy
miscalculated, assuming they would be willing to work in parallel and exchange
ideas, reckoning without Zhuranovsky's horror at the DA concept and in
particular his revulsion at the brutality of the nano-converting option
Fellini was to realise (even though they were assured that the nano-technology
was to be used to create DA-33 buma only from irredeemable human criminals)
and shock that his close friend was willing to undertake the project without
complaint. They quarrelled bitterly over the project's morality, Zhuranovsky
only agreeing to head the attempt to realise the entirely electronic version
of the DA in the hope of halting the nano-conversion option on which Fellini
was to work.
Things continued for nearly nine months with the two becoming ever
more rivals and less friends until at last Zhuranovsky's team had produced a
workable prototype body supposedly able to cope with the enormous capabilities
demanded for the new-generation machine and Zhuranovsky the first workable
mathematical representation of 33S physical responses and the initial base
driver code for the 33S-A CPU to take full advantage of the enhanced
prototype. Together with the initial DA-2134 pre-design and even some
progress with the miniaturised 33S-AD CPU intended for the DA-33 diminutive,
Quincy decided to give (overtly) his blessing to this more palatable
alternative whilst guessing correctly the effect his announcement would have
on the other scientist and hoping it would drive him to perfect his part of
the project.
Relieved that at least he had stopped the horror of the nano-
conversion option, Zhuranovsky turned his attention to convincing Quincy to
allow certain safeguards and instincts to be included in the developing
specifications of the new machines' neural-net. Seeing the obvious danger of
a fully sentient combat and covert-operations machine without its own brand of
morality, Quincy agreed to permit Zhuranovsky his indulgence in the first
prototype. If it passed its tests without fault he would consider using its
net as a base for all future DA33 machines.
Meanwhile Fellini, having driven himself mercilessly over the past
nine months to prove his project the better of the two and now obsessed with
the DA concept was given the news that his part of the project was to be
terminated and he was to mirror Zhuranovsky's work. Close to exhaustion and
nearly delusional through over-work and lack of rest Fellini snapped,
believing his former friend responsible for turning the chairman against him.
Vowing revenge, he convinced Dr. Natsumi Kanamoto (is that spelt correctly?),
the second in command of his project, his constant companion and a woman of
ice towards everyone but himself and her young daughter to help him in his
revenge. He planned to use the latest untested technology on Marina
(Zhuranovsky's 17-year-old daughter whom Fellini had loved as though she were
his own child before his madness and whom had always called him Uncle Antonio)
to prove his project a success. She would be better off in any case he
reasoned in his growing mania, free of the trappings of her frail human body
and a thousand times as able and intelligent.
The attempt was a disaster, with Marina dying horribly over several
days while her father watched in horror and helpless, impotent rage, realising
too late what had happened to the man he had once considered one of his
closest friends. In the last hours of her life, Zhuranovsky took a nano-scan
of his daughter's body (her brain was already too damaged for her to be
preserved), his own mind at the raw-edge of breaking as he began to plan
Fellini's and Genom's destruction for all the pain they had caused her and
himself.
Alone in the too-empty apartment after his daughter's funeral,
Zhuranovsky begged her forgiveness and began to map the scan on to the
physical model he would need to construct a perfect physical DA duplicate,
then worked to construct a base persona as close to Marina's psychological
profile as was possible. His new daughter could never replace her, but he
hoped that with his lost child as a base she could learn to call him father
and avenge those who had killed her.
Obsessed now, Zhuranovsky drove himself ruthlessly, solving problems
within weeks with a single-minded fanaticism that might otherwise have taken
him months. Astounded at the progress, Quincy allowed yet more effort to be
poured into his version of the DA whilst keeping close watch on Fellini.
Within two months of his daughter's death her copy was ready for
activation (Quincy had allowed the first DA to be given her form at
Zhuranovsky's request, certain it would encourage him to still greater effort
and fully aware of his intentions regarding Genom and Fellini). At the same
time he had Liana constructed by Fellini's team using the first DA as a base.
Hours after Marina's staggeringly successful activation, Liana was
activated and Quincy assigned her to Fellini as his personal assistant after
very specific instruction. Enraged, Natsumi told Fellini he could sleep with
the DA from now on and from that moment there relationship was entirely
professional; not that it troubled Fellini - nothing mattered to him now but
his continued revenge and his growing megalomania. Of course he did not touch
Liana -- the very idea of a relationship with something his nemesis had
created sickened him. Instead, stunned at the potential of the fully-sentient
and very human machine, he set himself to turn her into a creature of evil and
perversion so absolute that the chairman would be forced to have the project
terminated. At the same time he planned to use her as the controlling centre
of the army of converted slaves he planned to create (he was no longer
rational enough to realise the two plans could not coexist).
Working with maniacal desperation, Zhuranovsky perfected the DA-2134,
the diminutive control-drivers and the DA-specific OMS Marina would need to
control and reprogram any functional DA to his cause (which had become now the
DA buma's freedom far more than revenge as he grew to love her as much as the
daughter he had lost for the unique individual she was). Ready at last and
knowing the Elite upgrade was to be completed in two days time (at which point
he was certain Marina would be taken from him), he remained at the tower late
into the night on the pretext of ironing out last-minute bugs with Marina and
alone with her he uploaded the final version of her firmware which included a
self-destructive phage that removed her obedience to Genom and set her free.
At his instruction she destroyed the project's documentation after storing it
herself, modified the official firmware release, then attempted to gain access
to Fellini's project headquarters within the tower in order to free Liana (
Liana's firmware did not contain the DA-specific OMS she needed to take
control of her at a distance).
But Quincy wasn't ready to allow that. He had known exactly what
Zhuranovsky had been doing and although he had miscalculated a little,
believing Zhuranovsky would not try anything until the other four prototypes
were active, he had taken very specific measures to be alerted should such an
attempt be made. A `general power failure' to the area prevented Marina from
accessing the security to open the doors and allow them access. Zhuranovsky
leapt in his paranoia to the correct conclusion and deciding to run there and
then, stripped her down immediately to begin the Elite upgrade.
Completing the physical enhancements he reactivated Marina to see that
everything was functioning. Satisfied, he was about to begin the CPU upgrade
when Domina entered the laboratory and panicking at what she saw, screamed
that he couldn't leave her to take the blame for what he was doing. Trying
desperately to calm her down, Zhuranovsky asked her to go with them. He and
Domina had been very close and on the verge of a permanent relationship before
his daughter's death, that death destroying any chance of happiness for him
(and therefore them) until now when he was so close to finding happiness
again. Torn but still hurt by his shutting her out (not to mention his
obsession with the DAs) she tried to persuade him to change his mind until
suddenly Marina ended the argument by telling them that security buma were on
their way. Screaming at him to go, Domina turned to the door, not seeing
Marina's hand blur towards her head.
Checking to see that she was still alive, Marina turned and led the
escape.
With the pursuit close on their heels, Marina discovered that her
enhanced weapons systems couldn't be activated with the 33S-A CPU. Then on
the verge of the canyons the pursuit caught them and Marina smashed from the
car and dragged the man she called her father free just before it was blown to
pieces, the explosion seriously injuring Zhuranovsky. The rest, as they say,
is history.
