A couple years back, when a friend was sideswiped by a drunk driver, I
wrote a Ranma fanfic called 'Loss'.  Nodoka showed back up, and managed to
reconcile with Genma.  The went out for a night of dinner and catching up
and basically falling back in love...and on the way home, were hit by a
drunk driver and killed.  The fanfic dealt with Ranma having to come to
accept this fact, and developing the relationship between Ranma and Akane
as she helped him to deal with his grief.  While I now think it's not one
of better works (despite a few decent scenes), just relating it to point
out that variations on this theme _CAN_ be done without being utterly
ridiculous.  At least, I don't think Loss was utterly ridiculous... ^_^;
