The term you're looking for here is YAOI. Yaoi is a kind of manga/anime
that deals with male/male romantic relationships. If you have been
reading Windlilly's most recent Yu Yu Hakusho fanfic, you will be familiar
with this term, I believe she explains it. If sex scenes are involved,
then add the LEMON label, since yaoi does not really center in any way
around sex, as far as I understand it. In fact, there is another word
altogether for a kind of manga/anime that is just about male/male sex.
Someone out there with a better grasp of japanese, is there an equivalent
term for female/female material?
Why add this label? Heck, why label which series your fanfic is based on
in the first place? Most people cannot read every fanfic that comes down
the pike, and would appreciate as much info as possible to decide which
they might like to read.
As far as the Ryouga/Ranma fanfic which appears to have started this whole
silly thread, the author clearly put *caveat homophobe* at the beginning,
which the enterprising student can quickly break apart as a play on
"caveat emptor" or "buyer beware", so "homophobes beware" - of course, I
gamely hung in there to see Ryouga get squashed good, but smacked my "d"
key with the "RyougaI'may" line. Sorry, okay fanfic, but I'm not into
yaoi. I have a friend who is. Shrug. Different folks, different
strokes. I wish I had the 30 minutes I used reading it back, a yaoi tag
would have let me know it was a two-way thing right up front, but hey, the
fanfic mailing list is a place for learning, not publishing polished
finished pieces. Authors face people grinding on em with C&C, readers
have to live with the fact its a rough draft or a first try or an
experimental style or whatever. Enough, by bed whispers strange and
fearsome things, its time for sleep.
