He's more the martyr type. He'll do what he has to to be close to his loved
one, which means things like staying with Ukyou even though she only pays
him a pittance and doesn't give him all that much to eat or a particularly
good place to sleep... he's doesn't seem to be obtrusively annoying towards
his loved one, he's just... there.

2) how effective of a fighter is he?

does he use weapons?  how is he on the fighter's scale?

On a fighter-scale level... I'd gauge roughly on par with Ukyou. He uses
standard ninja weaponry and also has this rather funky attack which places a
lot of lipstick kiss marks on the target...
