I guess I bear some of the responsibility here, having pre-read this
story and encouraged the author to post it.

Yes, the Tendos in the story are not the ones we know. Do they have to
be? Unfortunately, this sort of thing does happen in some families,
and I saw this story as a grim reminder of that fact.
