Can Ranma who has absolute fear of cats overcome his fear just for the

Ranma's fear of cats is not absolute, merely overwhelming. You may recall
that Ranma manages to overcome his fear for a time when Gos exposes him
to all those cats under the stage (manga Vol 5; Viz manga vol 4 I think).
As for the force driving him to pick up Akane? Well, Ranma is protective
and Akane is small and vulnerable at the moment (despite being a cat).
And Ranma *doesn't* hate Akane (to say the least) and will bear almost
any hurt for her (plenty of objective evidence for that, too, but the ones
that spring to mind are the "couple cleaver" incident and when he's learning
the Hiryuu Shouten Ha in vol. 13 part 11).
