Prom Night
A Ranma Story (With Guest Stars)
by Shiaw Chi "Hokodan"
Chapter 1: Why Is It So Hard?
"Only 1 more days until the Junior Prom everybody," blared from the speaker
as the tune of "Vision of Love" played in the background. "Bids are being
sold at the school bank at $80 a couple, well worth the price of a dream
evening at the Sheraton Grande with the one you love. If you haven't asked
your dream guy/girl to go yet, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR! GO ASK THEM
ALREADY! They can't wait forever you know!" the voice screams. "Remember,
only 1 more day, so get a leg up!"
"Easy for her to say," mutters Ranma to himself.
It was a beautiful sunny day outside. Under the tree shade, there would be
no better time to ask her.
"Okay Akane, I'm only going to say this once, so you'd better listen hard,"
Ranma says quickly. "Will you... do you want... how about we... not that I
can't find someone else... but we should...," Ranma stutters. He takes a big
gulp and finally spurts out "...weshouldgotothepromtogether."
"My dear Ranma, you don't expect to sweep her off her feet by babbling that
nonsense do you?" ribbed Nabiki.
"Well, it's not like I really want to go with her!" Ranma shouted back.
"Then why are you asking me to help you?" Nabiki shot back. "And paying me
100 yen an hour to boot."
"Its... errr... I just... ah, I don't have to explain myself to you. Just
hurry up and help me already or you're fired," Ranma irately replied.
"I'm only trying to help Ranma. When you can admit it to yourself that you
want to go with Akane, it'll just come naturally. Now, try again."
"There's nothing to admit," rebutted Ranma. He let out a deep breath.
"Akane, let's go to... I would like to go with you to the Junior Prom...,"
Ranma finally said.
"Not bad Ran...," began Nabiki, but Ranma wasn't quite done yet.
"... but try to dress a little more feminine so I won't be embarrassed to be
with you in public," finished Ranma.
Nabiki slammed her palm onto her forehead. Then she decided to slap that
palm against Ranma's face. "You nitwit! I'm beginning to think I should
raise my rates for this! What do you think Akane will do if you say that!"
Nabiki screamed.
"Um, she'll probably try to rip my head off," Ranma timidly replied. A
picture of doctors surrounding him began to form in his mind.
"I'm sorry son, but we can't remove that mallet from your head. You'll have
to live as a freak for the rest of your life as mallethead," the doctor said.
"So you're not a complete fool," Nabiki said as she began punching the
hourly charges on her calculator. "Ranma, not that I want to turn away
money, but I don't think you'll be able to afford my services for much
longer. Besides, lunch is almost over and we'll need to get back inside."
"Akane, I want to go with you to the Junior Prom," Ranma calmly said. His
eyes opened wide when he realized what he'd just done. "I did it Nabiki, I
did it!" he happily shouted as he almost hugged her.
Nabiki was all too quick to shove her hand into his face before he could.
"Not bad Casanova, but now comes the hard part."
"The hard part?"
"Now you have to say that to Akane. In real life," Nabiki cynically said.
I cold chill shot up Ranma's spine. He couldn't even remember what he had
just said anymore.
"Nabiki, you've got to help me! What was I supposed to say? I forgot
already. Nabiki, just ask her for me. I'll even pay you extra!" Ranma
rambled.
"Sorry Ranma, you couldn't afford to pay me for that service. Besides,
you've fought off monsters, saved the universe, and live as a girl half your
life. Why is it so hard to ask Akane to a simple dance?" she said as she
walked back to class.
"Why is it so hard?" wondered Ranma.
"So did Ranma ask you yet," Akane's friend asked her excitedly.
"Yeah, did Ranma ask you yet," all her friends suddenly asked her as the
whole cafeteria surrounded her.
"Whu? Me and Ranma? No way! I wouldn't go with him even if he did ask
me," Akane defended. "I'd rather count the cracks in the ceiling than go
with him to the Junior Prom!"
"Oh, come on now Akane, Ranma isn't all that bad," one of her friends said.
"I think he's dreamy," another girl said.
"Besides, he's there for you everytime you need him. We all know he really
loves you but is just too shy to say it!"
"And he's got all these other girls pining for him all the time, and yet he
keeps holding out for you Akane!"
"Hey, maybe Ranma is.. you know. Another word for 'happy,'" someone
whispered in the background.
"Yeah, it is kind of weird..."
"I hear he crossdressess..."
"Will you please be quiet!" Akane yelled. "Whatever is between Ranma and I,
which is nothing, is between Ranma and me!"
All of her friends suddenly cowered back.
"Geez, you don't have to yell," and "somebody needs to get some," and
"Ranma's better off...," could be heard murmuring from the crowd as they all
backed away.
Akane plopped herself back down onto the bench and began nibbling on her
bread. "And here I am, waiting for him after I turned down a dozen other
requests. Damnit Ranma, do you even plan on asking me," wondered Akane.
Ukyou was dolling herself up more than usual. Actually, she had been
dressing up for the last month since they first started selling the junior
prom bids. Instead of wearing the male school uniform, she had been dressing
not only in the female uniform at school sometimes, but wearing different
casual attire in addition to that. For example, she was now wearing a long,
tight brown skirt with floral patterns, a ribbed tan shirt, and a pair of
black boots with 3 inch heels, a far departure from her usual neck to toe
garments. Perhaps most startling of all, her hair wasn't tied back right
now. Her long brown hair hanged over her shoulders. Of course, her spatula
was still mounted on her back.
She quickly sprayed herself on the neck with a small bottle. On top of all
that, she had actually waster her money on buying Victoria Secret body lotion
and spray, raspberry flavored (Mmmm, Raspberry). And yet, Ranma hadn't even
noticed any of this least of all ask her to the junior prom.
With only one day left to go, Ukyou decided if Ranma was too shy to ask her,
then she'd have to take the initiative. "Ranma honey, we're going to the
prom together if I have to drag your dead body with me," she told herself as
she walked to class. "As soon as that bell rings Ranma, your ass is mine."
From out of nowhere, a vending machine jumps in her path. A head, arms, and
legs sprout out from the side.
"Ukyou! Dressed up just for me! Does this mean we're going to the junior
prom together," exclaimed Tsubasa. For the past month, Tsubasa had been
increasing his attempts at Ukyou.
"For the last time already, I'm going with Ranma!" she shouts as the spatula
smacks into Tsubasa, throwing him out a window.
The old man shook his head in disbelief. He kept shaking his head as he
returned to work on his lettuce fields. "How many times has that boy come by
here looking for Furinkan High," he wondered. "At least once a week he comes
by here."
The funny thing was, he never knew if the boy has ever made it to Tokyo.
These past two years, and the boy could have been wandering around looking
for it with no success. It wouldn't surprise the old man if he never found
it. Just a minute ago, the boy had come around with the same map in hand,
lord knows why he even bothers to carry it around, and asked for directions.
The old man thought he might actually point the boy in the opposite
direction, in the hopes he would finally go the right way. Instead, the boy
goes the adjacent direction right off the face of a cliff. Lord knows where
he is now.
"Ranma, do you want a reduction in your expenses?" asked Nabiki as she runs
back to Ranma, who had just gotten up to go back to class.
"Reduction? That doesn't sound like you Nabiki," Ranma replied.
"Well, it does require a small favor," panted Nabiki.
"I don't know about your 'favors' Nabiki. Besides, class is going to start
any minute, both of us should get going."
"It will only take a second. Do you or don't you want a reduction?"
"I guess, but tell me what it is first...," Ranma gets out before Nabiki had
splashed a cup of cold water into his face.
"Kuno, I found the pig-tailed girl. Just make the check out to the usual
party," she calls out as she backs away from the now girl type Ranma.
"At last! I have found you my pig-tailed beauty," raves Kuno as he pops in
from around the corner. "Whilst there is only a sun set and rise before the
shining evening of our youthful lives shall dawn upon us, I must quickly ask
you to attend the junior prom with me my pig tailed girl!" he rants as he
tries to hug her.
A foot in his face was enough to halt his advance. Without much emotion,
Ranma says "Kuno, you're not a junior."
"Alas, that is true, but I cannot wait for the Senior Ball to experience an
apogee of romance with you my love!" he shouts as he pushes past Ranma's leg
and grabs Ranma into his arms. "And we shall forge our passions that night.
Off we go to buy your resplendent gown!" he shouts as he prepares to carry
Ranma off with him.
"There ain't no chance in hell I'm going to the junior prom, senior ball, or
even be seen in public with you at anytime!" yells Ranma. With more than
enough animosity, Ranma grabs Kuno's head, and shifts his weight so that he
heaves Kuno against a nearby tree. Ranma lands on the grass and turns to
Nabiki.
"Nabiki! What'd you do that for!" he screams.
"I'm just trying to save up some money for the senior ball, can't blame a
girl for that can you? Besides, I'll throw in this hot water for free for
your troubles."
"Aaaaahahahahahahaaaaahahahaha!" Kodachi laughs as she flings off her school
uniform. She leaps out of the window of her classroom maniacally laughing
"Ranma dear, your prom night date is coming my love!"
"Okay everybody, its nothing we haven't seen before. Back to chapter three
of the text book," the teacher calmly tells the class. He was new here, but
one became used to Kodachi's erratic actions quickly. He had been told to
just accept the eccentric behavior of Kodachi Kuno. At least, you'd better
accept it and give her good grades lest you find yourself waking up one
morning with chalkboard erasers stuffed up each nostril. Like the previous
teacher.
"Shampoo, lunch time isn't over yet. Where are you going?" asked Cologne
from behind the counter of the Nekohauten.
"Shampoo deliver home cooked meal to Ranma before class start. Ranma eat
while bored in class," she says as she leaps outside onto her bike with a
ramen delivery box in one hand. She then quickly rides off.
"Shampoo, wait for me!" shouts Mousse as he chases after her. He doesn't
get too far as he runs into a parked bus outside the restaurant face first.
"Cologne, did you move the doors again," a dazed Mousse whimpered.
As Ranma was pushing his way to class, he bumped head on with a girl.
"Hey, watch where you're going," the girl complained.
"And why don't you get out of my way," replied Ranma. He looked down and
realized it was Akane he was standing right in front of.
Before they even said another word, the entire hall way cleared an area to
make room for Ranma and Akane. It seemed the whole school, staff included,
was around them waiting for something to happen.
That cold chill creeped up Ranma's back again. He noticed breathing wasn't
as easy as it usually was. That's funny, he was standing still, but sweat
was dripping off his forehead. Not only that, but his brain suddenly decided
to stop working.
"Ranma...," Akane gently said. "Is there something you want to say?"
She looked at him, and for some reason, he seemed to be acting like Ryoga.
Not the "you're going to die Ranma," Ryoga, but the one whenever she was
near him Ryoga.
"Uhhh, something to say to you... Um, now that you mention it... I guess
there is this little thing...," Ranma babbles.
"Well, what is it?" she asked with a louder tone in her voice. "We're going
to be late for class."
"It's perfectly alright, class will wait for you two," their teacher said.
"Great, there's no way out now. It's time to bite the bullet. Do it or
lose it," Ranma thought. "Akane, will you...," he begins.
Chapter 2: I Don't Want To Go With You, I Just Need Revenge
"Akane, will you..., um, would you I mean...," stutters Ranma. All of a
sudden Genma and Soun popped up besides him.
"Don't choke now Ranma, go ahead and say it!" yelled Genma as he pushed
Ranma towards Akane.
"Ranma, you can stay out with Akane as long as you'd like," Soun tells
Ranma.
"What're you doing here? Do you guys follow us to school everyday," shouts
Ranma as he begins shoving his dad strongly.
"Daddy! Mr. Saotome, stop trying to set us up!" Akane also shouts as she
tries to squirm out of the crowd.
"Besides, what makes you think I was going to ask Akane to the stupid junior
prom anyway! I wasn't even planning to go, and if I was going, I'd be able
to do alot better that Akane," Ranma brags.
Ranma was tasting tile before he knew it. "That damned mallet," Ranma
cursed to himself.
"The same goes here Ranma! I'd go back to the negaverse before I went to
the junior prom with you!" she screams at him as she storms away. The crowd
is all too eager to get out of her way.
As the crowd splits like the red sea, a lone figure stumbled into the
hallway. "At last... I've made *huff* it here," puffed Ryoga.
Still fuming from Ranma's rejection, Akane quickly grabs Ryoga by the arm
and asks him "Ryoga, if you're not too busy tomorrow night, would you mind
going with me to the junior prom," she asked nicely.
"Akane, no!" startled Soun.
"Whah... you're asking me to... with you," Ryoga stammers. He was beginning
to feel light headed. He grabbed a hold of Akane and looked at her face
hard. "Nope," he thought, "this isn't Ranma impersonating Akane."
"Ryoga, if you're too busy, it's okay," Akane interjected. Perhaps she was
already regretting her rash decision.
"Too busy! Me busy! No, I have no life. Of course I'll go with you. Even
if I did have a life I'd still go with you," Ryoga rambles.
Ranma's jaw dropped in shock. Akane just asked RYOGA to go with her to the
junior prom!? She'd rather go with that thick headed pig boy than him?
Genma smacked Ranma in the back of the head. "This is all your fault boy!
If you've had some guts, she wouldn't have resorted to such a desperate back
up!"
"Hey, who you calling a desperate back up," barked Ryoga.
There is suddenly a loud crash as a wall is suddenly smashed apart.
"Ranma, Shampoo no late!" Shampoo chirps as she bashes through the wall.
She quickly hugs Ranma. "Shampoo bring Ranma delicious pork buns to eat in
class!"
"Shampoo, are you doing anything tomorrow," Ranma quickly asked her.
"Ai ya! Ranma asking Shampoo what Shampoo think?"
"If you're not busy tomorrow night, let's go to my junior prom. It'll be
fun," he tells her.
"Wo ai ne Ranma!" she screams as she wraps her arms around him. "Shampoo
have perfect dress just for occasion!"
Akane was seething. "So that jerk Ranma wanted to go with Shampoo this
whole time, eh? Well forget him, I never wanted to go with him in the first
place," she tells herself. "I'll have a better time with Ryoga than I'd ever
have with him!"
Akane pulls Ryoga closer to her, and happily smiles. "This is great! Why
don't you come to my house afterschool and we can hammer out all the
details," she beams.
"Heheh, hammer your floorboards, no problem," Ryoga says, obviously still
not grasping the situation. Or grasping it too much.
"C'mon Shampoo, why don't you give me a sneak peak at that dress that'll be
showing you off tomorrow," Ranma says nicely.
"Ai ya, Ranma say sweetest things! But what about Ranma school?"
"Not like I never cut before," he mutters under his breath. He then picks
Shampoo up with both of his arms. "I think tomorrow night's got priority
over class."
"Ryoga, why don't we go pick out a dress for me too, huh?" Akane pleads with
Ryoga in a sugar coated voice, as she rapidly bats her eyelashes.
Ryoga wasn't moving. He didn't even look like he was breathing!
"Ryoga, are you alright," asked Akane as she waved her hand across his eyes.
"Hey, Ryoga," she said as she gently poked him. He fell the to floor,
frozen in the same position, an awkward smile still on his face.
"Let's leave these losers alone," Ranma sneered as he prepared to jump out a
window. Before he gets the chance, a loud scream drew his attention.
"Ranma! Tell me it isn't so! You're not going with Akane, you're not going
with me, but you're going with that Chinese bimbo!" roared Ukyou. "Nuh-un
Ranchan, I've been going through way to much crap the last few weeks waiting
to go with you, and I smell like some goddamned raspberries! I don't even
like raspberries!" she screamed as she ran towards Ranma. "You drop that
bimbo and get your fanny here right now Ranma before I do something we both
regret!"
"Aaaahahahahahaaaaaaaahhahahaha!" crazily laughed a girl who had just jumped
in through an open window. "Ranma darling, I've come to accept your
invitation to the junior prom!" raved Kodachi.
"Oh no," Ranma thinks. "I should've known this was going to happen."
Shampoo jumps out of Ranma's arms right in front of Ukyou and Kodachi.
"Stupid crazy girl, Ranma go with Shampoo to prom. And dumb spatula girl,
you no interfere with Shampoo dream date!" she declares.
"Oh, we'll just see about that," Ukyou screams.
"No, you deceitful heathen, Ranma would never go with the likes of you!"
Kodachi yells.
A glow began surrounding all three of them. Their battle aura's were
reaching their peak charge.
"Ranma is going with me!" all three scream at the same time as they leap
into the air. All of them meet at the same point in mid-air, and they drop
to the ground as clouds of smoke begin forming from their onslaught.
"Akane Tendo! I shall allow you to attend the junior prom with me,"
announces Kuno as he suddenly stands in front of her.
"Sorry Kuno, but I have already got a date," she rudely tells him.
"Already have a date? This is all Saotome's fault! Does attending the prom
with the pig-tailed girl not whet your appetite fiend! Must you also steal
Akane Tendo to split your fancies with," yells Kuno as he charges Ranma.
Ranma easily jumps out of the way as Kuno goes crashing through a wall. "I
ain't going with that tomboy nor the pig tailed girl. I asked Shampoo to go
so get off my back!" shouted Ranma as he lands behind him.
"Nooo! You're taking Shampoo to the prom! I won't allow this!" screams
Mousse who had just appeared in the hallway as well. He charges at Ranma
with a baseball bat in his hands. "Release Shampoo from your treachery now!"
"So you dare take three girls with you to the prom! How reprehensible!"
shouts Kuno as he charges at Ranma as well.
Ranma jumps out of the way just in time so that Kuno and Mousse smash face
first into each other. They fall back down to the ground dazed. Little
pig-tailed girls were circling Kuno's head, as little ducklings were circling
Mousse's.
"That's it, I'm outta here," Ranma utters as he jumps out the window and
climbs to the roof top.
The three girls stop their fighting to notice Ranma leaving.
"Ranma wait for prom night date!" yells Shampoo as she begins following
Ranma.
A foot is suddenly on top of her head, as Ukyou bounces off Shampoo towards
Ranma. "Ranma! You ain't getting away so easy! We still need to talk!"
shouts Ukyou after Ranma.
"Ranma dear, what about poor little me, I saved myself just to go with you,"
she says sweetly as she follows the others. Her voice changes into a tone of
anger as she growls, "So you'd better appreciate it and go with me."
Ranma peeks around the corner of the chimney to see the three girls flying
off in different directions. He dropped onto his butt as he let out a big
breath. "I should have thought this through more," he told himself.
He suddenly hears the wind breaking behind him, and quickly leaps away as
mini-spatula's dig themselves into the concrete.
"You've got some explaining to do Ranchan," Ukyou says as she lands on the
rooftop. "I could understand if you went with Akane, that'd be your parents
fault. But you're going with Shampoo over me!"
"It's not that easy to explain," complained Ranma from the top of the
chimney. "It was kind of an accident."
"Well then, you won't have any problems breaking it off with her and going
with me then, do you!"
Ranma jumps close to Ukyou. He grabs her by the shoulders and asks her
"Ukyou, do you love me?"
"Oh no Ranma, you want me to say that again," she replies nervously.
"Okay, let me rephrase that. Do you care for me enough to not want to see
Shampoo rip off my head and stick it on a pike outside the Nekohauten."
"Oh, I see your point," Ukyou sadly admits.
"Look, I'm sorry I didn't ask you to go. Honestly, I'd rather go with you.
But Shampoo was just in the right place at the right time," Ranma
apologized.
"No, no, it's okay. I'll just stay home all by myself while everybody else
is having fun tomorrow night. Just bring back some pictures... and I'll
pretend *sniff* I was actually there," she whimpers out before she started
crying.
Ranma hated it when girls cried. It made him feel so... powerless. He took
a hold of Ukyou and started patting her in the back until she stopped crying.
He then looks at her and tells her, "You know, you still have another day
left. Maybe you could find someone else to go with you? Especially with how
cute you've been dressing lately."
"Oh Ranchan, do you mean it!" she gushes. Ukyou hugs Ranma with enough
force to crush his lungs. "*Sniffle* maybe I will go," she replied. She was
feeling alot better now. So what if Ranma wasn't going with her? He liked
her clothes!
"Great then. I have to go before Kodachi finds me. I don't think she'd be
as understanding as you'd be. So I'll just see you later," he says as he
begins leaping from rooftop to rooftop.
"Another date? It would allow me to keep tabs on Ranma and Shampoo
tomorrow. Make sure she doesn't try anything with him. But who am I
supposed to ask this late in time?" she wondered.
From out of nowhere, a man had grabbed her and began squeezing her.
"Shampoo, my love. You aren't really going with Ranma to that silly prom
are you? No, you're going with me," glozed Mousse as he continued hugging
Ukyou.
Ukyou slipped her spatula free and smacked Mousse over the head with it.
"Why don't you keep your stupid glasses on!" she screamed. Then an idea
struck her.
"Mousse, if you aren't busy tomorrow night..."
"Akane," sobbed Soun. "Please reconsider your actions. It's not too late
to dump him and go with Ranma," pleaded Soun.
Akane was getting mad. She was sitting in class now, and her father was
still causing a commotion. Why didn't the teacher do something about this?
Ryoga was sitting next to her. There was no way he was going to risk
getting lost now, so he asked her if he could just follow her around until
the prom. "Mr. Tendo, you can trust me to take care of...," Ryoga tried to
say before Soun had swatted him away like a fly with his arm.
"Akane, for family honor, for your father, please go with Ranma."
"NO! I am not going with Ranma," shouted Akane. "I'm going with Ryoga and
I wouldn't go with Ranma if my life was at stake, alright dad!"
"Akane, go stand in the hallway," her teacher instructed her. "And take
your father and your friend with you."
Kuno was wandering around town aimlessly. He considered it meditating, but
his mind was just a blur of images of the pig tailed girl and Akane Tendo.
"Alas, that vile Ranma has stolen both of my loves away from me. With only
an evening left to spare, who should I attend tomorrow night's reception
with," he wondered.
Some kids had run across him, blowing bubbles from there newly acquired toy.
Some of the bubbles popped against Kuno's face.
"Ah, the joy's of adolescence. To be living the glory's of yesteryear
without such worries weighing heavily on my mind would truly be bliss."
Someone accidentally bumped into Kuno and Kuno turned to exact his revenge
on the person.
"Sorry, excuse me mister," a man in a sailor uniform apologized as he rushed
off.
"That is right fiend, you had better flee least my blade thirsts for your
hide!"
He continued walking down the street, and stops at a corner as a blue car
makes a sharp turn around it. Some kids ran past him, dressed in some
makeshift costume cheerfully yelling "Mercury Bubble Blast," and "Moon
Scepter Elimination." "Kids these day, they get stranger and stranger," he
thought.
Kuno continued walking around lost, trying to think of someone else to ask
to the junior prom. "Will the heavens not assist the mighty Tatewaki Kuno in
his most desperate hour?"
Somewhere in Tokyo, a girl with short blue hair sneezed.
"Bless you," said a blond hared girl.
"Thank you Mina," Amy thanked.
*Author's Notes: I'm going to be saying it alot, so get used to it. Send all
comments, and I mean ALL comments, to schi@uci.edu or chihokodan@aol.com.
The more support I have, the more motivated I am in pumping out more work.
Well, there you go, my first fanfiction after Ranma/SM. I have to say, the
pace of this story is way different from Ranma/SM. Without all that
fighting, I'm actually having to rely on my writing skills. Hope it wasn't
that bad. People who have read my previous work, yes, I do like to work with
big casts, but I focus on Ranma and Akane while incorporating everyone else
just like last time. I hope nobody expected Ranma to go with Akane, that
would be far too simple. Anybody wondering what the hell Sailor Mercury was
doing in the story, Kuno fell in love with Amy in the Ranma/SM story. Kuno
was willing to die for her, and that really impressed Amy, but not enough for
her to fall in love with him. Amy just tolerates Kuno more than anyone else.
But I have to admit, I love the chemistry (or lack of) between the two. If
you haven't read it, try to find it or e-mail me. I felt I did a good job
evolving what happened between the two. Not to mention everything else! I'm
sorry if anyone is disappointed by the speed of this story expecting more
Ranma/SM, but I think the humor's still there. By the way, this fanfic will
not be as long as Ranma/SM, but it's beginning to look longer than I
expected, so my work on the Tenchi Muyo/El Hazard/Fushigi Yuugi fanfic is on
hold now (I've only finished a page). I'm going to try to get this one over
in less than a month, but don't expect it to end until January.
