Subject: Formatting advice to avoide strange line breaks
Date: Monday, December 16, 1996 8:58 AM
I see quite a few stories which have a strange line break for just
the first
line. Sort of like this paragraph has a strange line break.
Finally...someone who knows......
It took me a while to figure out what was wrong, but I finally
did.
The problems is that, everyone who has such a line break, is using a hard
TAB character, rather than a select number of spaces. Most computers have
a
"TAB stop" of 8 characters (meaning a TAB character will use a number of
spaces up to the next value of characters which is a multiple of 8: i.e.
there are tab stops at 8, 16, 24, 32, etc. characters).
The problem arises when the TAB stop on your computer is set to
less
than
eight characters. When that happens, this sort of formatting error
occurs.
Only the first line in a paragraph is impacted. There are two solutions
to
this. #1, set your TAB stops to 8 characters. #2, replace your hard TABS
with a specified number of spaces.
Thanks for listening.
