OK, Ranma walks into Joketsuzoku, proposes to the most eligible young
maiden in the village and meets the challenge required by the village
custom, in front of the entire village.
At this point village law applies and she is forbidden to reject him.
(Not that she'd want to ;-)  They are at that moment married.

     NO, they are *NOT* married yet. They are engaged and forced to
marry. At least that's what I understood when I read the first 3 Viz
Graphics Novels.
