        Gee, I did a little research into that area just a few minutes ago.
I think you still have an old copy of the FAQ (the one that says it was
last updated May 22, 1996).  There is an updated one that was reposted
by Panda-san within the last week.  Here's what it says on the subject:

UPDATED!!! (as of Sept 19th 1996)
The second way is to use anonymous ftp.
Using an FTP client, ftp to [bachman.newberry.edu] and look in the
subdirectory [/fanfic]. The ftp site holds almost all the posts to the ML
not just the last 1000. 

        I wouldn't say that it holds almost all the posts.  I don't think
it holds even the first half of 'em.  But the older posts are interesting 
to look through ^_^
