CHAPTER 5: Preparation Time

"You didn't have to accept, you know.", said Akane as
she and Ranma walked home. Ranma was walking on the
fence, his eyes staring of into the distance while Akane walked
on the ground, carrying P-chan in one hand, her bag in the other.
"I could have defended myself. I don't need you to defend me.",
continued Akane. Ranma turned around and leapt down to
Akane, an annoyed look on his face. "Look you, I'm not doing
this for you! I'm just doing it to...um..to...to get rid of this Salvo
guy once and for all, that's all.", yelled Ranma. Akane and P-
chan stared at him with surprised looks on their faces. Suddenly
Akane's face broke into a smile. "Oh, I get it", she smiled
moving closer to Ranma, "You really do like me. That's why
you defended me." P-chan's eyes flew open as if to say
'WHAT!' "What, no, I just...", started Ranma. "That's it! You
do like me!", laughed Akane as she dropped P-chan and began
running away. "Akane wait!", shouted Ranma as he began to
chase after her. "You like me, you like me!", teased Akane as
she continued running. "How could anyone like a kawaikune
tomboy like you?!", shouted Ranma as he ran after Akane.
Akane ignored his remark and continued laughing all the way
home with Ranma chasing her. P-chan chased after Ranma,
oinking his anger.

It was night at the Tendo training hall, and Ranma and
Akane were busy in the dojo. "So why are you helping me
anyway?", said Ranma as he dodged a flying kick from Akane.
"It's my pendant, remember? No way am I going to lose it to
Salvo.", replied Akane as she blocked Ranma's punch. "But I'm
the one fighting him, not you.", explained Ranma. He jumped
out of the way of Akane's roundhouse kick and landed behind
her. "That doesn't mean I can't help you get ready. Salvo is a
strong opponent, you don't now what he'll do.", retorted Akane
as she turned to face him . "Strong? Just because he beat
Kuno? Anyone can beat Kuno if they try!", laughed Ranma
boldly before he was floored from behind. "Cockiness will get
you killed Ranma.", Ryouga said, standing at the door, arms
crossed. "Ryouga!", said Akane. "Hey P-chan.", smirked
Ranma as he sat up on the floor. Ryouga walked over to
Ranma, bending over to meet him face-to-face. "Who are you
calling P-chan?! I'm a human, not a pig!", Ryouga shouted. "So
you say.", Ranma chided. "Look Ranma, I came here to help
you train", Ryouga said, a small smile on his face, "Now do you
want my help or not?" "Look....", Ranma began. "Really,
Ryouga?", interrupted Akane, "You'll really help Ranma train?"
"S-sure, Akane.", Ryouga blushed. "That's really nice of you!
Thanks Ryouga!", said Akane as she got up, "Well, since you
two will be training now, I think I'll turn in. And this time, don't
train all night!", she said as she walked out the door. "Well,
wasn't that nice of you P-chan.", Ranma said annoyingly, "Now
what's the real reason you agreed to help me?" Ryouga had a
look of anger on his face. "Shut up! I came here for one reason
and one reason only. To make sure you lose!", Ryouga shouted
as he leapt at Ranma. "I knew it!", Ranma said, running at
Ryouga, "Why do you want me to lose anyway? It doesn't
affect me in any way." Ryouga came in with a thrust kick.
"Wrong!", he shouted, "It has everything to do with you! If you
lose to Salvo, Akane will have to give up that pendant, and that
means she'll hate you! Then you can't call yourself her fiancee
anymore!" "What!", Ranma shouted as he kicked Ryouga into
the wall, "What fantasy world are you living in?!?" Ryouga got
up with a smirk. "If you lose, it will prove to Akane that you
don't care for her, because you didn't fight hard enough, and
she'll lose that pendant.", he said. Ranma stood motionless for a
moment. "Prove that I don't care?", Ranma thought, "But I
really don't care, do I...? Besides, Akane wouldn't really hate
me, would she....?" "You're full of it Ryouga! No way Akane
would do something like that!", Ranma shouted angrily. "Yes
she would! And I'm going to make sure she does, even if I have
to kill you!" Ryouga shouted as he ran at Ranma. "Go ahead
and try it, you jerk!", yelled Ranma as he jumped at Ryouga.

"Great-grand-daughter, is it true what I hear?", asked
Cologne as she hopped into the kitchen. Shampoo was busy
cleaning up the kitchen of the Nekohanten. The repair crew had
just finished up. "What true Great-grand-mother?", replied
Shampoo. "Mousse told me that a new boy at Furikan High
challenged Ranma to a duel for a pendant that Ranma gave to
Akane.", Cologne said. "Is true.", said Shampoo, a small edge
in her voice. "Why doesn't Ranma give Shampoo presents?",
Shampoo said under her breath. "What was that Shampoo?",
asked Cologne. "Nothing!", replied Shampoo, trying to hide
behind a fake smile. "You can't hide from me", Cologne said,
her eyes narrowing, "You're upset because Ranma gave Akane
a gift and not you." Shampoo just looked down. "Grand-
daughter, if it really bothered you that much you should have
told me.", Cologne said. Shampoo looked like she was on the
verge of tears. "Ranma supposed to love Shampoo! Shampoo
much better bride than Akane!", she shouted. "There, there.
No need to get upset. We'll just have to make sure that Ranma
loses. That way Akane will lose the pendant and her trust in
Ranma. Then he will be yours.", smiled Cologne. "Aiyaah!
Great-grand-mother, you really think it will work!", Shampoo
jumped up joyously. "Of course it will work", said Cologne, "I'll
make sure of it. Come, let us visit this Salvo" Both left through
the back door after closing the restaurant, failing to notice the
figure hiding behind the boxes near the storeroom. "I can't let
them do this! Shampoo is my bride!", Mousse said to himself as
he emerged from his hiding place, "I've got to stop them!"
Mousse jumped from his hiding place and ran towards the door.
Or at least what he thought was the door, as he slammed into
the wall next to it.

Tuesday night, one day since the challenge: Ukyou
closed the front door of her restaurant. "Well, that wasn't a bad
day's work", she thought to herself, "Maybe now I can afford
Nabiki's tickets." "Okay, thanks. I'll be over with the papers in
the morning.", Ukyou heard from next door. She turned to find
a small man in a business suit talking to a very familiar figure.
"Salvo?!", she said to herself. Ukyou leaned closer to listen to
their conversation, making sure not to be seen. "Arigato, Mr.
Tanaka. I appreciate you find this place for me. It's in the
perfect location.", Salvo said. "Your welcome, my boy. But I
have to ask where did you manage to get so much yen in the
short time that you moved here?", asked Mr. Tanaka. "Well,
uh...my....my Uncle Kenji helped me save it up for when I was
going to move here. He said he exchanged it at the local
banks.", explained Salvo. "Must have cost him quite a bit,
exchange rates being what they are and all.", commented Mr.
Tanaka. "That's why I vowed to him that I would make it on my
own here, so that his sacrifice wouldn't be for nothing. That's
why I need this store.", replied Salvo. "Well, it's yours my boy",
smiled Mr. Tanaka as he turned to leave, "I hope you like it, and
good luck." "Thanks again!", shouted Salvo as he entered the
store. Ukyou emerged from her hiding place and walked over
to the store next door. She crept up to the front window and
peered inside. A small gasp escaped Ukyou's lips. Salvo was
inside the store with several large blocks of ice surrounding him.
He wore no shirt and had his eyes closed, a look of deep
concentration on him. "Where did he get all that ice in such a
short time?", Ukyou thought to herself. Suddenly Salvo's eyes
flew open. "What's he......?", began Ukyou. Salvo punched at
the first block in front of him, then kicked at the block next to
him. He continued punching and kicking the blocks of ice
around him. Finally he stopped, and walked to the back room.
"What was that all about?", thought Ukyou as she peered
deeper into the store. Suddenly, the blocks of ice began to
crack. "Huh?", thought Ukyou. The blocks then shattered,
spilling ice all over the floor. "I don't believe it!", Ukyou said to
herself, "I've got to tell Ranchan about this!" Ukyou turned back
to her store and ran to her apartment upstairs. Meanwhile,
Salvo had returned to his training room, a small steel shovel in
his hand. He looked towards the front window of the store.
"How did those hand prints get on my front window?", he said
to himself. "Oh well", he added as he began scooping up the ice
and placed it into metal containers.

Akane awoke to the sunlight that was shining on her
face. "Mmmmmm...", she murmured as she stretched, gingerly
touching the pendant around her neck. She instinctively turned
towards the spot on her bed where P-chan would be sleeping.
"P-chan?", she called. Getting up, Akane looked about her
room for her pet pig. "I wonder where he could be?", she
thought. Suddenly, she heard a crash. "That came from the
dojo!", Akane exclaimed. Akane quickly dressed and ran
downstairs. "Akane, please tell Ranma and Ryouga that it's time
for breakfast.", Kasumi called after Akane as she ran towards
the dojo. As Akane approached the dojo she could hear the
sounds of battle. She burst through the door to find both Ranma
and Ryouga exhausted on the floor, sporting large bruises in one
place or another. "Had.....enough......P-chan?", gasped Ranma.
"Shut.....up!", grunted Ryouga weakly. "Don't tell me you two
were fighting all night again! Why do you have to pick on
Ryouga so much Ranma?!", Akane shouted. "Hey, he started
it!", Ranma said defensively. "I don't care!", yelled Akane, "You
two shouldn't be fighting this much! Look what you did to the
dojo!" Ranma and Ryouga both looked up to see that the dojo
interior was in ruins, with walls and floors smashed, and
bandannas littered about. "I'm sorry Akane", Ryouga said, his
face sincere, "Ranma and I will be happy to clean up." "We
will?", asked Ranma, "I mean, we will!" Akane looked at them
both with a look of surprise. "T-thanks Ryouga. Well then,
when your done Kasumi has breakfast ready.", she said. Akane
turned to leave just as she remembered that P-chan was missing.
"Ranma, have you seen P-chan? He wasn't in bed this
morning.", Akane asked. Ryouga looked stunned. "Don't
worry Akane, P-chan's closer than you think.", Ranma glanced
at Ryouga with a smile. Ryouga looked extremely nervous and
began to laugh frantically. "I hope your right Ranma.", Akane
said, as she turned and left the dojo. "Trust me Akane. The
little bacon bit still here, probably right underneath your nose.",
Ranma shouted after her as he felt a hand grab his head. His
head was turned to meet Ryouga's. "What are you trying to do,
you idiot! You almost told Akane who I was!", Ryouga
shouted. "But P-chan!", Ranma teased, "She was so worried
about you, not sneaking into her bed like some pervert."
Ryouga's eyes grew red. "You shut up Ranma Saotome!
Prepare to die!", he shouted as he punched at Ranma. Ranma
just dodged, teasing Ryouga still.

"Here you go, Ranma", smiled Kasumi cheerfully as she
handed him a bowl of rice, "And here you go Ryouga." Ranma
and Ryouga both accepted their bowls and began to eat
frantically, glaring at each other. Ranma, Ryouga, Nabiki,
Akane, Kasumi, and Soun were all seated at the table. "Enough
already!", yelled Akane, "Honestly, don't you both ever get tired
of always fighting?" "Aw, he knows I'm just kidding with him,
don't you P-ch....I mean Ryouga?", teased Ranma. Ryouga had
a look of rage on his face. "Ranma!", said Soun, a slight
tremble in his voice. Ranma stopped teasing Ryouga and
looked up. "Your father has been missing for three days now",
cried Soun, tears forming in his eyes, "I miss him so! Do you
know where he could be?" "Well, gee, Mr. Tendo, I haven't
seen Pop since he ran off. I still think he's hiding something."
Just then a knock was heard at the front door. "Oh, my! I
wonder who that could be?", said Kasumi as she got up to
answer the door. "Why, hello Ukyou! Ranma is inside. Would
you like some breakfast?", Kasumi smiled, opening the door and
stepping aside. "No thank you. But I really need to talk to
Ranchan.", Ukyou replied. "Ucchan!", Ranma exclaimed,
"What are you doing here?" "Not a very warm greeting.",
Ryouga said. Ranma ignored him, "What brings you here?"
"Ranma, yesterday as I was closing up I overheard a
conversation between Salvo and a real estate agent. Salvo
purchased a store next to mine.", Ukyou began. "So?", Ranma
interrupted, "Maybe he's planning to open a business and do
some honest work." "I don't think so", Ukyou continued, "The
real estate agent asked Salvo how he got so much yen in such a
short time in Japan, and Salvo seemed really nervous. Then he
said something about an Uncle Kenji helping him to get the
money." Akane took special interest in that piece of
information. "Then that can only mean one thing.", Nabiki said,
finishing up her breakfast. Everyone turned their attention to
her. "This 'Uncle Kenji' is a business contact for the black
market in which Salvo sells off his stolen goods.", she explained.
Everyone became quiet as they let the words sink in. "But Salvo
told me 'Uncle Kenji' was his adoptive father....", Akane thought
to herself, "Was he lying?" Finally Ranma spoke up, "Do you
really think that Salvo is thief, Nabiki?" "Well why else would
he get nervous when someone asked about where he gets his
money from?", Nabiki smiled. "Then I'm going to make sure he
doesn't get that pendant", Ranma thought, "Akane would hate
me for it."

"Ranma, there's something else you should know",
Ukyou said, pulling Ranma out of his thought, "After Salvo went
inside his store I, uh, decided to observe his actions....." "You
spied on him.", Akane put bluntly. Ukyou looked embarrassed,
"Um, yeah....anyway, I watched him train through the front
window of his shop....." "Was he cute?", smiled Akane. "Stop
that!", Ukyou said, her cheeks turning a little red, "He was
training with these huge blocks of ice. He shattered them with
one blow! And he was so fast! Ranchan, I'm worried about
this guy. He seems really dangerous!" "That's because he
studies the ancient art of Freezing Point Martial Arts.", said a
voice from the doorway. Everyone turned to see Genma, a
look of grim determination on his face. "Saotome!", cried Soun
as he latched onto Genma's leg. "Pop, where have you been?",
Ranma asked. "Never mind that Ranma. I heard about your
duel with Salvoson, I had to come to warn you.", Genma said.
"Warn me about what? I can beat Salvo. I've never lost.
Huh?", Ranma said as he felt a hand grab onto his shirt.
Suddenly Genma flipped Ranma into the pond out back.
Ranma-chan emerged from the pond. "Whad'ja do that for?!",
she shouted. "Just getting you used to the cold, Ranma.",
Genma said his eyes closed. Suddenly his eyes snapped open,
the room growing dark. "Listen Ranma. Your opponent has
studied the ancient art of Freezing Point Martial Arts. It is a
dangerous art form that was founded by Japanese settlers who
moved to Canada", Genma explained, "There they trained in the
harsh cold of the northern regions, blending together Japanese
martial arts with Canadian wrestling techniques." "Doesn't
sound like much", Ranma-chan said, "I've trained in the cold
too, Pop."

"Doof!", Ranma-chan grunted as a sign hit her in the
head (Genma kept a supply of them just in case of an
emergency). "Don't be cocky, boy! I haven't told you the true
danger of Freezing Point martial arts. A master of Freezing
Point martial arts can use his 'ki' energy to lower the temperature
around his body, enabling him to freeze anything around him!",
Genma explained. "That's cool!", Akane exclaimed. Ranma-
chan just looked at her, "No, that's cold." "That would explain
how he got those large blocks of ice so fast.", Ukyou said to
herself. "You'll have to be careful when fighting Salvoson,
Ranma", Genma said, his expression solid as a rock, "You can't
let him hit you with any ice power technique." "Say, Pop, how
do you know so much about Freezing Point martial arts when
none of us had ever heard of it?", Ranma-chan asked, her eyes
narrowing, "And how did you know his name was 'Salvoson'?"
"I, uh, he, uh...", Genma blabbered nervously. "And why did
you freak out when you saw Akane's pendant?", Ranma-chan
said, edging closer to Genma. "Uh...I...Umm...Ooops!" smiled
Genma sheepishly as he picked up the nearest mug on the table
and splashed it on himself. "YYEEOWW!", he shouted as he
realized it was hot tea he splashed on himself instead of cold
water. "OWOWOWOWOW!" Genma bounced around the
room in pain, Soun still attached to his leg crying. "Moron.",
was all Ranma-chan had to say. "Ranma.", Akane said.
Ranma-chan turned around to look at her. "If what your father
says is true then you're going to have to come up with a way to
avoid Salvo's ice attacks.", she explained. "No problem,
Akane.", Ranma-chan said. "How am I going to beat someone
who controls ice?", Ranma-chan thought to herself. "I've come
to warn you Ranma Saotome!", shouted a voice from nowhere.
Everyone looked around to see where it was coming from.
"Your life is in grave danger Ranma Saotome!", shouted the
voice again. Everyone turned to see Mousse talking to a tree in
the back yard. "Who are you talking to?!", shouted Ranma-
chan.

"Who could that be at this time in the morning?", Salvo
grunted as he walked to the front of the store to answer the
knock that was coming from the door, "Whoever it is I should
give them a piece of my mind! I need this time to train. The
fight's only eight days away and I have to be ready! Ranma's
not going to be a pushover from what Nabiki told me." The
knock stopped once Salvo reached the door. "That's strange.",
he thought as he opened the door. "Can I help you....huh?",
Salvo said as he realized he was staring into empty space. "It is
not how you can help me but how I can help you.", said a voice
from below. Salvo looked down to see a small, wrinkled
person hanging onto a large cane. "Oh wow!", Salvo exclaimed,
"Are you one of those magic trolls that grant wishes?" WHAM!
Salvo found himself flattened against the wall. "Who are you
calling a troll?", asked Cologne as she removed her staff from
the back of Salvo's head. "Oh, g-gomen nasai. I didn't realize
you were a person", Salvo said, getting up off the ground, "Is
there anything I can help you with? The store's not open yet
but..." "As I said before it is not you that can help me, but we
who can help you.", Cologne smiled. "We?", asked Salvo.
"Surely you have already met my great-grand-daughter,
Shampoo?", Cologne said as she gestured towards the door.
Shampoo walked in wearing a very form-hugging Chinese dress.
Salvo swallowed. Hard. Shampoo giggled and walked up to
Salvo, taking his arm. "We..uh...we met at school.", Salvo
stammered, trying to remain calm. "Well then, allow us to
explain what we have in mind", Cologne began, "We're here to
help you defeat Ranma Saotome." "Duh...feat....Ranmama?",
babbled Salvo, trying to ignore the beautiful woman next to him.
Boy she smelled good. And felt good. And.....nevermind.
Shampoo formed an evil smile. Their plan was working. "I
have here a special powder that will cause Ranma to become
very lazy. This way you can defeat Ranma easily.", Cologne
explained. "Powder....defeat......Ranma", babbled Salvo,
smiling like an idiot. "Then you will regain your pendant and
bring down the evil Ranma Saotome.", Cologne finished. "And
Shampoo be very grateful...", Shampoo said, leaning closer to
Salvo, who started to sweat like a maniac. "He's no Ranma, but
he's not too bad", Shampoo thought to herself, enjoying the
effect she was having on him, "At least he pay's attention to me."
"So are we in agreement?", Cologne asked. Suddenly Salvo
regained his composure. Gently unhooking Shampoo's arm,
Salvo pushed her away and walked towards the rear of the
store. "If, you don't mind my asking, what do you two gain from
this?", he asked. "Shampoo is engaged to Ranma, and by
making it seem as if he did not care about defending Akane or
the pendant he gave her would cause their relationship to break.
Then Shampoo could rightfully claim her husband.", Cologne
explained. "I see....", Salvo said, annoyed that Shampoo was
only fawning at liking him. It didn't matter. "So what you're
asking me to do is to cheat in an honorable fight, ruin a
relationship, and I would regain my pendant and you a
husband?", Salvo asked, a cold look on his face. "Well, yes.",
said Shampoo. "Why didn't you just say so?", he smiled.
