CHAPTER 3: Salvo's Story

Kasumi quietly prepared the pork for dinner in the
kitchen, humming to herself. She had just put it into the pot of
soup when she heard a pair of voices moving from the front of
the house. "I still can't believe he tried to do that!", shouted
Akane. "Oh! It's Ranma and Akane! They might be hungry
after their day at school", said Kasumi said to herself, "I'll just
prepare a snack for them." "Well, we still don't know why he
wants that pendant, Akane.", said Ranma. "Well, we're not
going to find out why, because he's not getting it!", fumed
Akane. "Well, there has to be a reason why he wants it so
badly! Why else would he act like that?", Ranma countered.
Kasumi walked in with a pitcher of lemonade and a plate of
cookies. "Hi Ranma! Hi Akane!", said Kasumi cheerfully, " I
thought you might be hungry after your day at school so I made
you a snack." "Arigato, Kasumi.", said Akane, sitting down at
the table. "Yeah, thanks Kasumi.", Ranma said as he sat next to
Akane. They each picked up a cookie and began to eat. "So
what's this about somebody trying to take your pendant,
Akane?", Kasumi asked as she poured some lemonade for them
both. "Some jerk tried to take the pendant Ranma gave me.",
Akane fumed. Kasumi looked at Ranma with a smile. "It -It
was just too get rid of her!", Ranma stuttered when her noticed
Kasumi's expression, "So the tomboy wouldn't keep hitting
me!" POW! Akane's fist embedded itself into Ranma's face.
"Doesn't seem to work.", said Nabiki as she walked into the
room and sat down, "You know Ranma, I think I have an idea
why Salvo wanted that pendant so much." "Huh?", Ranma
said beneath Akane's fist. "You do?", said Akane finally pulling
her fist free. "It's very rare. I haven't seen it in any jewelry store
around here. Something like that can be worth a fortune on the
black market.", explained Nabiki. "And how would you know
about that?", asked Ranma, his eyes half closed. "Call it
business sense.", said Nabiki with a smile.

"So he's in this for the money, the jerk!", Akane
shouted. "But Akane, you don't know that for sure.", said
Kasumi. "But you didn't see him Kasumi!", Akane countered,
"He was so determined to get it! He even offered to buy it from
me. Probably would have paid me with the money he got from
selling it." "Maybe it holds the key to some secret power", said
Soun, entering the room. "Oh! Hello father! How long were
you listening?", asked Kasumi. "Just now. Ranma, surely you
realize that you cannot allow this Salvo person to take your
engagement gift to Akane.", began Soun. "It's not an
engagement gift! I just thought it would make the tomboy look
better!", shouted Ranma. WHAM!! A large mallet appeared
from nowhere and flattened Ranma into the ground. "Enough
already!", fumed an angry Akane. "Ranma, it is you duty as
Akane's fiancee to protect both her and the pendant. It is the
symbol of your love for her.", continued Soun. "Ifn nog a
fymgol", said Ranma beneath the mallet. Just then, Genma
Saotome walked into the room. "There you are Tendo. We
have to finish our game of shogi", he said before placing his eyes
on the pendant around Akane's neck, "Oh no! Akane! Where
did you get that pendant!" "Ranma gave it to me when we were
cleaning out the attic.", answered Akane. Genma ran over to
Ranma and pulled him out from under the mallet. "Foolish
Boy!", he shouted, "Do realize what you've done! They can find
us now! How could you do this to your father!" "What do you
mean? Do you know something else about this pendant that you
never told me?", said Ranma, suddenly recovering. "Well,
uh...", stammered Genma as he put his son down. "All right
Pop! Tell me the truth. Where did you get the pendant, and
why is it so important?", ordered Ranma. "I can't, I mean you
would think.....oops!", said Genma before throwing a glass of
lemonade on himself, "Roww, roww, roorf!" Genma-panda
suddenly got up and began running away. "Oh no you don't!",
shouted Ranma, "You're not turning yourself into a panda to
escape this one! You're gonna come clean!" With that Ranma
grabbed a conveniently-placed kettle of hot water and began to
chase after his father. "Will those two ever stop?", thought
Akane to herself, "Oh well. I might as well go train before
dinner." With that, Akane excused her self from the table and
walked to the training dojo, leaving Ranma to chase Genma-
panda.

"HEEYAH!", shouted Akane as her fist smashed
through a cinder block. Getting up, Akane began practicing her
daily kata. "Why is this pendant so important? And why does
Salvo want it so bad?", thought Akane as she kicked and
punched into the air, "He doesn't really seem like a bad guy, but
he changes his mood so easily, who knows what he's thinking?"
Akane began to execute some high flying kicks when she felt a
strange presence. Her battle sense kicked in, and she turned
toward the door of the dojo. "Somebody is out there!", thought
Akane, as she began to walk towards the opening. Looking
outside, Akane scanned the backyard, trying to locate the
strange presence she felt. Something moved from the corner of
her eye. "C'mon Ranma, stop playing games!", said Akane as
she turned around. No answer. Akane was beginning to get
worried. Suddenly a figure jumped atop one of the stone pillars
of the back fence. Akane ducked behind a tree and peered out
at the figure. She strained to see its face. "Salvo!", she thought,
"What's he doing here? Wait, I bet he's going to try and steal
the pendant back, the thief! Well, I'll show him!" Akane's face
formed a look of determination as she hid behind the tree,
waiting for Salvo to jump down to the backyard. But Salvo
remained still, and after a moments search, sat down on the
stone pillar, his back to Akane. "What's he up to?", thought
Akane, "Why doesn't he come down. Oooh! Fine! I'll
confront him myself!" Akane left her hiding place and marched
towards Salvo. "What are you doing here!", shouted Akane.
"Whaaa!", Salvo screamed as he jumped up from the pillar,
"Oh! Akane, you startled me!" "What are you doing in my
home! Trying to steal my pendant?!", demanded Akane.
"What?! No I just...", replied Salvo. "Then what are you doing
here?", shouted Akane. "I-I'm sorry Akane...", Salvo said
quietly, a look of sorrow crossing his face. "Huh?", said Akane,
her expression softening. "I didn't know that this was your
home", explained Salvo, "You see, I was trying to find the best
place to view the sunset, and right here gives the best view."
"Sunset? What are talking about?", asked Akane. "I never told
anyone this before.... but I trust you Akane.", Salvo began.
"He-he trusts me, after the way I treated him?", thought Akane.
"You see, when I was young, I used to watch the sunset with my
parents every day. It was the most beautiful thing I ever saw.",
explained Salvo, sitting down, his eyes lost in space. Akane's
cold visage melted, and after a moment's hesitation, she jumped
up on the pillar and sat next to Salvo. "What...happened to your
parents?", asked Akane quietly. "They died in a car crash when
I was 7 years old.", said Salvo, his head moving down, "That's
why I watch the sunset from the best points every night, so I can
honor their memory." "I'm sorry...", said Akane, looking at
Salvo, "I didn't know..." "It's all right. I'm just sorry that I
invaded your property without asking", said Salvo, looking at
Akane. "It's OK", replied Akane.

Akane stared into Salvo's brown eyes. She sensed
something in them..... a longing perhaps? Akane turned her
head away from Salvo. After a moment of silence, Akane piped
up, "So if your parents died when you were seven, then where
did you live all these years?" "I moved into my Uncle Kenji's
dojo.", replied Salvo. "Your Uncle Kenji?", asked Akane, a
puzzled look on her face. "Kenji Yukitora. Uncle Kenji was a
good friend of my father's. He took me in and taught me
everything I know about Freezing Point martial arts. He was
like a father to me, so I adopted his last name, and used my old
last name as my first, so as not to forget my heritage", Salvo
explained. " He also told me about a pendant my mother used to
wear, that mysteriously disappeared when they were traveling to
China.", he added. Akane's face had a look of worry. "Can it
be?", she thought, "Could Mr. Saotome have found Mrs.
Salvoson's, pendant? That would sort of explain his reaction
earlier." "Akane?" Akane looked up and saw Salvo standing
up, a look of sincerity in his eyes. "Whatever happens, I want
you to know that I'm sorry that we got off on the wrong foot. I
never had many friends in Canada, mostly because I devoted
my life to perfecting my skill of Freezing Point martial arts so that
I could find my mother's pendant. Anyway, I just wanted to say
that I wish I didn't have to do this, getting that pendant that is. I
would have much rather us been friends." "Salvo...", started
Akane. "Thanks for letting me use your fence, Akane", said
Salvo as he leaped off, "I'll see you tomorrow...."
