Wow, I can do references even without seeing the material I reference!

The running in the rain with the father's diary is ripped originally
out of Batman Forever.  it's a lot more of a plot point in the
excellent novelization by Peter David, which uses the ANIMATED SERIES
characterizations, thank god.
