It's already straining my belief system to call what I wrote adequate, 
especially since all of the first chapter and most of the second come 
right out of the Manga.

Well, you stuck so close to the manga that there was nothing in those 
chapters to criticise, you offered no hints of future plotlines and did 
a passable job of writing on a grammatical/technical basis - so what did 
you expect people to say?  Very few list members go in for truly detailed 
nit-picking.

And do remember that it has been said before on this list that even the 
best authors count themselves lucky to get more than 3 or 4 worthwhile 
efforts at C&C.
