Well, wouldn't you know it, a $199 word processing program can't even
put a carriage return into a text stream. I got tired of that, and so I just
finished building a program which takes a text file and word-wraps it at
any number of characters from 25 to 78 (defaulting at 72).
Currently, I just have it compiled for DOS, but if you want it for
something else, I can give you the code. I *THINK* it's ANSI compatible,
but didn't check.
The program is called txt_fmt.exe and is available from this location:
http://www.rit.edu/~bmk7411/files/txt_fmt.zip
This includes the DOS/4GW file needed to run it, as well as a readme.txt
explaining it in better detail.

On a semi-related note, I wrote a program called Reflow, available on my web
page (http://www.io.com/~ksethre/), that does the opposite, taking a
word-wrapped text file and putting one paragraph per line to prepere it for
printing from a word processor.

It's for DOS, it's written in Turbo Assembler, and source code is included
if anyone wants to mess with it. It also has a text file describing (for
anyone who cares) how it works, and speed comparisons to an early version I
wrote in Turbo Pascal 3 (can you say "700% speed increase"?).
