I don't believe there is any "right" way to write a fanfic. I do,
however, believe that if you write the characters out-of-character,
you risk alienating your audience. Your audience is generally
comprised of fans of the series and they know how the characters
behave. If they are behaving differently, you'd better explain why,
or your readers will simply quit reading.
