Next we have "Wishing Upon the Same Star," a five part (so far) story
about a Ryoga that no longer gets lost, Nabiki and Ukyou going to war,
Shampoo going slightly off the deep end, Kodachi being forced into
several rather horrid situations, and a Ranma that seems to be losing
all grips on reality. And that is only the first five parts. The
author really put a lot into this one. I must say, however, that I was
not that fond of this fic. All the interesting bits of Ranma 1/2 are
slowly being removed, turning it into a shallow comparison. Ryoga cured
and no longer lost, Shampoo chasing Ranma in BOTH forms now, and several
other things just seem to drain some of the life out of it.
Story: 3.5 (The author did put a lot of thought into it)
Plot: 2 (i am still trying to figure out the plot)
Overall: 3
The plot seems fairly convoluted and may well increase in complexity
before anything is resolved - but it seems clear that the original
premise of the story was Ryouga's wish and the consequences that flowed
from that. Other plotlines and subplots appear to have been later ideas
that fitted in.
What the wish actually was remains unclear, but it obviously wasn't a
simple 1-off wish - at the moment my best guess is that it was something
like... "I wish ALL my dreams would come true".
One point of interest is whether or not the author will have the wish
give Ryouga permanent benefits, or will Ryouga's efforts come unravelled
as he attempts to take advantage of what he's gained. I must admit that
I like the way that in the original Manga use of magic, trickery or
deceit that is harmful or dishonorable always ends in failure.
Hmmm... if the wish was along the lines I suggested... some of Ryouga's
dream sequences in the ANime/Manga have started with him and Akane being
together, only to end with Ryouga spinning down into darkness as Akane
walks off with Ranma. A lot depends on the wording of the wish - and how
the author chooses to interpret it.
