Something I wrote to Zen that may deserve a wider dispersal...

	A thought I had.  I think *a* reason a lot of us are so fixated 
on Akane getting Ranma is because it's a consolation prize for having so 
little else going for her.  The two talents she has are attracting men 
and martial arts.  The first she never wanted and the second is 
overshadowed by pretty much every other fighter in the series.  
Everything else she tries she's either a miserable failure at (cooking, 
swimming) or gets ignored for the rest of the series (acting)...

I actually want Ranma and Akane together because they're in love. If
they don't get together, it's obvious from the manga that they will both
be miserable ... And if they're not, then the characters are OOC. And,
basically, I only like OOC in it's place - in an elseworld story, where
it is clearly marked to be in another universe/world/time frame/etc.

And all the people who put Ranma with someone else are just tearing apart
a relationship without reguard for anything - home wreckers, almost.
So I think if they don't like to work within that already set relationship,
they don't care about love or relationships all that much, and when they
put Ranma together with <insert name of their favourite Ranma girl here>,
they're acting out their fantasies by replacing Ranma with themselves
(or how they would be if they could do martial arts and had some of
Ranma's characteristics) and getting the Ranma girl of their dreams.
So I don't think it's got anything to do with the characters, and it's
more like otaku wish-fulfilment.

*shrug*

But then, if the guys that write like that are Akane fans ..... ^^;;;

And I don't know about the girls who write like that, if they do ...
probably just want to make their favourite female Ranma character
happy, and don't care about the real Ranma relationships ...
