I like Kenkusha's College Dictionary.  Also Nelson's kanji dictionary (or
one like it) is a must.

Perhaps the best thing for you to do is to wait untill class and see 
what dictionary/textbook's your teacher recomends. After all you do want 
to get a dictionary that will work for your class and not just for 
tranlations...:)

If you are looking for a cheaper Japanese/English dictionary with Kana 
and Kanjii in it, give the Random House dictionary a try. It doesn't have 
all the slang or words of the others, but it does work effectivily.
