Just to throw my two cents in... (Sorry, YEN!)

senshi: death in military action; death on the battlefield

The actual characters would then be:

sen = "War"
+ shi = "death"

right?

Anyway, the way I've seen "Senshi" written, it's with "shi" =
"scholar/practicioner", like so:

      |
   ---+--- <-- note: the top bar is longer than...
      |
    -----  <-- ...the bottom one. This distinguishes it
                  from the character for "earth"

ie, a 'sen' + 'shi' = "practitioner of war" aka, "soldier", or more
properly, a "warrior"


and translates soldier thusly:

soldier: heitai


That too. Remember, languages aren't limited to one word per general
meaning. It might be that "Heitai" is just a GRUNT, while "senshi" is more
like a warrior. I don't exactly have a Japanese dictionary in my possession
at the moment.
