        If I recall correctly (and I'm not entirely certain about most of
this) they probably figured it out themselves, because Ranma implied that
his cure was probably to be found in China, as early as the second chapter
of the first volume, but it was not stated baldly at the time that the cure
was indeed the nannichuan.
        The earliest other mention of the 'spring of drowned man' that comes
to mind off hand would be Shampoo's instant nannichuan water.
