Comments on [FFML] Twisted Fairy Tales (I goofed using the replay field in my
mail program so the Subject line is gone...:/)
Warped, Twisted, Funny, Weird...Hey they all describe this fic which reveals
a warped sense of humour not seeb in Biles since Lemonade, although this I'd
have to argue is more warped. The idea is unexpected brilliance take some
classic fairy tales (the non-Disney versions...) and mix them with an Anime
series (Ranma 1/2) and create a truly twisted moral. What you get is some
suprisingly good comedy fiction.
What makes these stories work too is the fact that they are based on warped
views of the Ranma universe. One can easily argue that Shampoo's version of
events in Ranma 1/2 would match the one shown in the first tale by Shanpu,
although not to such an absurd extreme. And it's not that far fetched to call
Ranma and Genma Ogres in the second tale, and for Nabiki to come of as clever.
All taken from a a slightly (okay very) warped POV of the main character in
the fairy tale. I don't know, maybe this is a way for John to force more
history lesson's on to us in the guise of a Fanfic, because after all history
is nothing more than one person's POV (thought not as warped as those shown
in the first two tales offered..:).
There is also the familiar Fairy tale conventions. The fact that the main
character is made to be all knowing andessential an all round great person
while everyone else is either not importantor just plain evil. Once again you
can see that in this story as we get an entirly biased thrid person narritive,
one that verges on being 1st person. Yes we know that Ukyou and Akane
(Kodachi on the other hand fit's these sterotypes like a T..^_-) are nothing
like how they are played in these tales, although they do act like that some
of the time. But the fairy tale offers up awarped perspective. Who's to say
that Cindrella's step sisters really weren'tall that bad, after all the story
is from only one side (although I don't wantto get to deep on that idea...)
And the fairy tale does provide a great chance to see a truly warped take on
the inner workings of the characters...
Not that the tales where perfect mind you. There are some slight problem in
the second tale offered up by Biles, the Nabiki story. I thought the story
was a bit longer then it needed to be. IMSO good short-length stories would
better carry acrross this message than longer tales. The first one provided
a sharp contunity of events with no plot devlopment, while the second one
wanderd a bit from it's main path. The sub plot's involving Kasumi were really
not needed, and the point of bankruptcy if the Dojo kingdom should of happened
a little bit sooner.
But all in all a great idea that provides a warpedm unique view on Anime.
I can't wait to see the tales for Kuno or Kasumi(perhaps the most difficult,
but the most rewarding if pulled off). Also, a slight plea, bring this over
to some other anime universes. Warped fairy tales from the SM, BGC, and Tenchi
or El Hazzard would be as enjoyable to read as tales from Ranma. And would
provide even more fodder for the wraped view you've taken....
Ja ne!!
