"Hey."
"Hmmm?"
"There's something I've been meaning to ask you."
"Wha?"
"About your eyes ..."
"Why are they like this, you mean?"
"Yes ..."
"Well ... when I was fourteen years old, I was just starting to
get involved with the cycle crowd ... I was still living in the orphanage,
but I didn't leave til I was seventeen ..."
"When ..."
"Yeah. Anyway, as part of one of those "youthful rebellion"
things that seem pretty cool at the time, I got my eyes dyed."
"NANI?"
"It's pretty simple ... they put you under, then they squirt some
artificial pigment into the iris. If I'd been a little smarter, I'd've
worried that I was gonna get organ-robbed when I was out, but ..."
"And it's permanent?"
"Lasted all this time."
"Huh."
"What?"
"Shouldn't that have given you a clue that you weren't a clone?"
Silence.
"Well?"
"Shut up, Raye."
Author's Notes
This was inspired by a minor discussion on a.f.bgcrisis about the
reason Priss has her distinctive eye coloration. I don't doubt for a
minute that, considering all the technology of Mega-Tokyo, artificial
pigmentation would exist. (If it exists now, I plead ignorance.)
