       Try reading 'The Night', it goes into a lot of detail surrounding 
the night the girls' mother died.  Most stories I've read concerning the 
subject tend to use 'round' numbers when discussing this event; most 
often 10 years previously.  That would make them: Kasumi-9, Nabiki-7, 
and Akane-6 (or thereabouts).

        Maybe I will. I was looking for an answer if there was one in the Manga.

      Admittedly, I've read FanFics that have had the mother passing on
everywhere from last year to just after Akane was born.  Frankly, I find
the jumping around of ages a bit distressing; but what're ya gonna do?
Everybody writes to fit their own vision of the Ranmaverse, so don't let
such things distract you in writing a good story.  Difinitive things,
like how Mrs. Kuno left the series have a 'canon' answer (at least, I've
been told).  Some things like Mrs. Tendo's death do not.

        Yep. As has been said she got eaten by a turtle. Kinda puts a damper
on a scene I was planning but I'll get around it.

       Oh, BTW, whenever I need a name to go with some background
character, I look at the list of people who did the Japanese voices
for the series.  Lots of male *and* female names there.
