How much/how badly do the Ranma cast swear in the anime or
manga? It's been the subject of a recent thread, and I've bumped into
the problem with my own writing. To me, the nastier swear words feel
out of place with the general feel of Ranma 1/2, but that could be wrong.
Mild swears pop up in the series (hell, jackass, etc...) and the liner
notes translates 'shit' and a few others... but is that as vulgar as they
get? Just curious.

Actually, Ranma swears pretty bad. Ryoga, Mousse, et al also swear,
but not as much or as severely as Ranma does (maybe this is because
we see them less). For starters, they generally use rough, yakuza-style
Japanese that no native adult (except yakuza) would use. Also, Ranma
not infrequently refers to his father as "kuso-oyaji" which literally means
"shit-father". Now, I admit I'm not as up on Japanese culture as I could
be, but the thought occurs that "shit-father" is not the most respectful
appellation Ranma could choose to employ. They also use "chikushou"
or even "dochikushou", the literal translations of which escape me, but
are used as profane exclamations much as we would say "Damn!" or
"Shit!" These words are not used in polite society.

The girls pretty much stick to the mild stuff. "Baka" is about the worst I
recall (as opposed to the boys' "bakayarou", which is analagous in
meaning but much more emphatic).
