JEFFERYSTR@rascal.guilford.edu EXPANSION CARD By Tom Jefferys Based on characters and situations created by Rumiko Takahashi- sama, and if you say otherwise, I'll rip your toenails off! ;) Please. Send C&Cs. I won't hire a hit-man, I promise. :) ------------------------------------------------------------------ "The Ucchan's was busy that day. One of the best days of business of my career. However, it turned out to be the worst day of my life..." Ukyou hummed to herself as she wiped the cooking grill off for another round of her World-Famous (well, Nerima-Famous at least) Okonomiyaki. The love of her life, Ranma, or "Ran-chan" to her, was sitting in his favorite booth with his other iinazuke. Ukyou was assaulted by a wave of jealousy, but fought it down. After all, the Tendou girl didn't even like Ranma, and the feeling was mutual. Still, it always puzzled the proprieter of this restaurant why the two who stressed their utmost annoyance at each other seemed to do a lot together. Could it be? Nahh! I'm way too cute for Ran-chan to dump me for that violent girl, Ukyou thought. Although elsewhere, Ukyou would fight viciously for her iinazuke, in the Ucchan's she was at the very least civil. "Here ya go, Ran-chan," her voice sang, and she flipped the freshly-made, steaming confection to her Ran-chan. The young martial artist caught it with little effort, and with the manners of a pig, attacked it with a viciousness only matched by the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal. "Oink, oink!" Akane snorted sarcastically as she watched her iinazuke eat. Ranma looked around, a confused look on his face. "Ith Ryouga heref?" he asked, half-chewed okonomiyaki crumbling out of his mouth. Akane fumed. "RANMA! RYOUGA-KUN IS NOT A PIG!!" "Wanna bep?" Ranma answered, more crumbs spilling out. "AND KEEP YOUR MOUTH CLOSED WHEN EATING! NO ONE WANTS TO SEE WHAT'S IN THAT DIRTY MOUTH OF YOURS!" They started off into YAT (Yet Another Tiff), raising the volume in the restaurant significantly. It was almost loud enough to prevent Ukyou from hearing the phone ring. She grabbed it and stepped as far away from the argument as possible, and lifted the reciever to her ear and mouth. "Moshi moshi, Okonomiyaki Ucchan's! Ucchan speaking..." she began. The person on the other side spoke. Ukyou's face lit up (quite a feat, as she wasn't particularly gloomy at the time), and all but squealed into the reciever, "Mother! Oh, it's good to hear your voice again!" "Yes, Mother! I am acting more feminine nowadays. I've tracked down my iinazuke and we worked it out. It was all just a misunderstanding involving his Pop." "Ranma, of course! Who else was I engaged to?" Ukyou's face had lost its brightness as she detected trouble on her six. She turned away from the restaurant and spoke in more hushed and concerned tones into the mouthpiece. "Mother? What's wrong?" Ukyou listened for a minute, and her eyes widened with shock. "Sterile?! But that can't be! I--" Interrupted, she just listened to her mother as she related the story. The color drained out of her face. She hunched up to the phone, and whispered into the reciever: "Then... who... you know?" Her mother told her the answer. Numbly, Ukyou cast a glance at Ranma. She stared at him for a few seconds, and then turned back to the phone. "Are you sure?" *POW!* "Okay..." Ukyou said weakly. She set the reciever back on the hook and took a few deep breaths to calm her nerves. Color return- ing to her face, Ukyou stepped heasitantly toward the fuming "lovebirds". Ukyou blinked her brown eyes. "Ran-chan," she began. The boy turned to her. "Ucchan?" Ranma asked. "We need to talk." Ranma blinked, then winced at the pain of a fresh welt on his face. He spared a glance back at Akane. "Sure, Ucchan..." he said. They left Akane to fume after their argument, slipping into the back. The girl who was left stood ramrod straight, nose turned up, eyes closed, a scowl on her pretty features. Her ears were closed as well, refusing to acknowledge anything that her iinazuke would say. This has the interesting effect that anything that is said is thoroughly anylized and processed before it is actually sent to the brain, cutting down on any pauses usually mandated by shocking news. Thus, when Akane rejoined the here and now, she had already formulated her response: "We - need - to - TALK??!!!" she growled, as her face flushed beet-red, her eyes narrowed and two tufts of hair curled upward all the way in her Lucifer impression. "RANMA NO SUKEBE!!!" "So what do you need to talk about, Ucchan?" Ranma asked at last, turning to his childhood friend. Ukyou slumped down onto a bag of flour. "Ran-chan..." she began, looking up at Ranma. "You know about the incident with the yattai, right?" Ranma smiled wryly. "How could I forget?" "Well, you did, ne?" "That was a figure of speech, Ucchan..." Ranma dryly replied. "The point is that your Pop gave it to my Pop as a dowry and left you by the side of the road." "Dad did do that, didn't he?" Ukyou agreed, sadness in her voice. 'Dad?' Ranma's mind noted. "So what about it?" "I think that incident was meant to disguise something more sinister, Ran-chan..." Ukyou started. Ranma blinked. "Sinister?" Akane thundered toward the door that she had seen Ranma and Ukyou enter just a little while before. Akane was going to confront Ranma about this, and then beat him into a pulpy mess. How dare he go behind her back... not that she did anything with her betrothed, mind you. But, dammit, Ranma was HER fiancee. At least Ranma would have the common decency to break up with her before going to Ukyou instead of just stringing them all along. She threw open the door and screamed within, "RANMA?! WHAT DID YOU DO TO UKYOU?!" Ranma jumped fourteen feet into the air (thank goodness for tall rooms :) at the sound of his betrothed's voice. Ukyou was a bit startled, too, judging by the volume of hair that stood straight up. "A-A-Akane!!" "YOU... TWO-TIMER!" the short-haired girl hissed. "LETCHER!! GIGOLO!!! HUSTLER!!! PERVERT!!!!" "WAIT, AKANE! LET ME EX--" "WHAT IS THERE TO EXPLAIN??!!!" Akane roared. Mallet time. "RANMA NO BAKA!!!" *BOOM!* Ukyou looked at the hole that was left by Ranma's passage. She turned to the still-steamed girl and said, "Akane, if you don't learn to trust him soon, Ranma's going to leave you for someone else." "He deserves every bit of it..." Akane said dryly. She knelt by Ukyou, taking her hand into her own. Her face became soft and supportive. "Akane, what--" Akane stopped her before she continued. "Ukyou, I know this is going to be hard for you... and I understand." "A-Akane! How did--?" "Isn't it obvious?" Ukyou blinked in surprise. "It is?" Akane nodded. "Why are you being so nice, Akane-chan?" Akane swallowed. Ranma had committed an act that would shatter any hopes that they would be together. "Because I've lost." "Huh?" "I lost Ranma!" Akane repeated tears dancing in her eyes. "He loves you more, Ukyou, if he's willing to do that with you and not me. I... I hope he makes you happy..." She released Ukyou's hand and ran from the room, crying. Ranma looked absolutely flabbergasted. "What was THAT about?" "Go to her, Ran-chan..." Ukyou commanded. "I have to close my shop, but I'll be along. That's when we'll confront Genma." Akane burst into her room, collapsing onto her bed and sobbing into the pillow. P-chan grunted questioningly, cuddling up to her, seemingly trying to sooth her with his love. For those who know that P-chan is actually Ryouga, this is precisely what was going on. P-chan growled. Ranma was responsible for this; he just knew it. Her chant of "Ranma no baka!" attested to that. "Oh, P-chan..." she wailed, glomping him to herself tightly enough to make him squeek with discomfort. Akane loosened her grip at the sound, but still held him securely. "That jerk Ranma... why did he string me along like that if he wanted Ukyou all this time? You'd think he'd break up with me before he did his thing with Ukyou..." P-chan growled inwardly. That cad! How dare he go behind Akane's back?! He has no honor! "It's over, P-chan! Ukyou won!" Akane choked. "They-They have a child to prove it..." Akane continued to sob, clutching P-chan tightly. P-chan remained calm, awaiting his love to sob herself to sleep. After that, Ranma would pay. "Kasumi!" Ranma shouted when he entered the foyer. "Where's Akane?" Kasumi looked at Ranma with a worried look on her face. "Akane went up to her room a little while ago. She was so sad. Did something happen?" "A case of crossed signals, I believe..." Ranma answered. "I'll go talk to her." "All right." *KNOCK!*KNOCK!* "Akane? Akane! It's me, Ranma," came a voice on the other side. Akane awoke, staring at her door with tear- filled eyes. "C'mon, Akane! I know you're in here!" Ranma's voice came again. "Ranma, go be happy with Ukyou!" Akane shouted back, "Not as if I... (*sniff*) cared anyway!" "Akane, it's not what you think!" "What am I SUPPOSED to think?!" Akane snapped back. "You went and had your way with Ukyou!" "Had my way with..." Ranma repeated, a strange look on his face. Comprehention dawned. "Akane, I didn't--!" Akane ripped open the door, tears streaming down her face. "Don't lie! Ukyou's pregnant with your child!" *SLAM!* "Ukyou's not--" Soun reared his ugly head, looking like the nine deamons of hell that had been fused together in some sick scientific experi- ment. "YOUUUUUUU!!" he roared. Ranma took one look at him and ran screaming. "YAAAAAHHHHHH!! GET AWAY FROM ME!" Ukyou stepped into the foyer of the dojo and wondered immedi- ately what that racket was. Then she saw Ranma tear down the stairs with some THING in samurai armor chasing after him, shoot- ing off an arrow at him every chance it got. "RAN-CHAN! WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?!" Ukyou shrieked. "IT'S A MONSTER!" Ranma answered as he ran by. "RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!" Ukyou calmly pulled out her spatula on steroids and mashed it down onto the thing's head. *CLANG!* The monster fell to the ground with a very satisfying *THUD!* Ukyou tore loose the spatula (*RIP!*) and lifted off the helmet. "Tendou-ojisan!" she declared. "*whew!* Thanks for the save, Ucchan," Ranma gasped. A wry grin crossed his face. "He's gotta show me how he DOES that!" "Where's Genma?" Ranma snorted. "Probably sleeping on the porch again, the useless ball of fur." Ukyou nodded and stepped into the house, and having shoes that were an integral part of her pants, she didn't remove them. They found Genma-panda lying on the porch dozing. "WAKE UP, POP!!" roared Ranma into the panda's ear. Ranma and Ukyou smiled as they watched him jump five feet into the air and landing on his head. The panda irately held up a sign (pulled out of nowhere.com) saying, "That was uncalled for, son." "You don't know my reasons," replied Ranma. Nodoka came in from the kitchen as Kasumi followed. The elegant wife of Genma blinked confusedly at her son. "And what are those reasons, Ranma?" Ranma glanced at Ukyou and began, "Ofukuro, I..." "...he's been a naughty boy, Obasama!" Nabiki piqued as she walked in. "Wha-What are you...?" Ranma started. Nodoka fixed her eyes on the girl just entered. "Define 'Naughty', Nabiki-chan." "Let's just say that Ukyou has one of these..." Nabiki held up a sticky-bun. "...in there." She pointed toward the toaster- oven sitting in the corner. From the gathered group's reactions, it could be said that they caught the drift of her implied statement. Nodoka's jaw dropped. Kasumi placed a hand delicately on her cheek. "Oh my!" she gasped in shock. Ukyou blushed deeply as her hair stood straight up. "WHAT?" Ranma facefaulted. Genma-panda looked especially shocked by this. He held up a sign saying: "You wreched son! How could you do such a thing to your..." The rest of the sign was quickly put out of sight by him turning it to the other side, which read: "Uh, never mind." Nodoka grasped her katana, making Ranma pale. "Ranma, you betrayed your fiancee so by siring this woman's child?" Ranma, eyes wide as dinner-plates, shook his head vigorously. "NO!" "Don't lie, Ranma!" Nabiki teased. "I heard you two had a little talk not half an hour before!" Ranma shot her a bad look. "You're not helping matters any, Nabiki!" Nabiki just smiled and watched the carnage. Nodoka gained a glistening tear in her eye and drew the katana. "Ranma, you have made love to and impregnated a woman who was not your fiancee... This is not an act of a man of men... Anata, you have failed me..." Ukyou urked; the panda screamed; Ranma fainted dead away. Akane popped in and bawled, "She is too his fiancee! (*sniff- sniff*) Genma took her father's cart as a dowly for Ukyou's hand. (*honk*) And now... and now, they can marry and have dozens of children for all I care! BWAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! I AM BETRAYED!!!" Akane fell to her knees, in a full Tendou Sob (tm). Ukyou raised her hand. "Um..." Nodoka blinked and poured a quantity of hot water on her husband's head from a Handy-Dandy (tm) teakettle. "Anata? Is this true?" "Yes it is." read the sign. Nodoka smacked her husband's head with it. "I engaged them in exchange for making Ukyou Ranma's iinazuke." *CLANG!* "OH, SO _NOW_ YOU ACKNOWLEDGE MY ENGAGEMENT TO RANMA, EH?!!" Ukyou roared, her Big-Ass Spatula conforming to Genma's bald and handkerchiefed head precisely. "In view of this new development, Ranma," Nodoka said evenly, "The honorable thing to do is to dissolve your engagement to Akane and marry Ms..." *RIP!* "Kuonji Ukyou," Ukyou answered, "But I--" Soun stormed into the living room and shouted, "NO! Ranma's marrying Akane, even if he has bedded with this whore!" Ranma kicked Soun in the mouth. "How DARE you call Ucchan a whore?!" Soun popped up immediately with tears streaming down his face and a footprint on his face. "Ranma! You shall not marry Ukyou! Your engagement to Akane is more valid than some shady deal made by Saotome-kun for a cart!" "But Otousan... Didn't a couple of bottles of wine contribute to your decision to marry Ranma to one of us?" Nabiki pointed out. Soun interrupted Ukyou, saying to his daughter, "Our agree- ment was earlier! Besides, we're friends!" "Can I say some--" Nabiki smiled. "And weren't you friends only because of Happousai?" "True, the engagement and Saotome-kun's friendship were the only good things to come out of the training..." Soun mused. Said old letch rocketed in and whacked Soun on the head. "Ingrate! I taught you two the school of Anything-Goes Martial Arts and you dare say that you didn't learn anything?!" "C-Calm down, Master!" Soun sweated. "We derived much revered wisdom from your tutalage! Heheheheh!" "Would someone list--" "Anata," Nodoka asked as he threatened Genma with a sword held in close proximity to his 'unit'. "Why did you not tell me of this before?" "Eh-heheheheh... Musta slipped my mind," Genma said lamely, holding the sword back with two fingers. "Saotome-kun, help me out here!" whispered Soun from under- neath Happousai. "I've got my hands full trying to hold back my wife!" Genma answered in kind. "Explain, Anata!" "Ranma! Why settle for one? Have both of them!" "THE NEXT ONE TO MAKE A SOUND GETS SPATULA ON THE BRAIN!!!!!" Ukyou bellowed, brandishing her Spatula. Everyone proptly shut up. "Thank you! Now, let me make one thing perfectly clear: *WE* *DIDN'T* *DO* *ANYTHING*!!" Akane stopped sobbing. "You... you didn't?" she asked. "No, we didn't. And we're not going to, ever." Genma sighed with relief. "Then who IS the father?" *CLANG!* "*I* *AM* *NOT* *PREGNANT*!" Ukyou shouted. "OW! I get it, I get it!" Genma whined. *RIP!* Tom stuck his head in and asked, "Then what IS this about?" Everyone turned to him and bigsweated. Tom smiled an embarrassed grin and waved back. "Sorry! Wrong fanfic..." He then *BIP!*ed back into nonexistence. ---- The Author looked up from the keyboard and gave an embarrased smile. "Well, I had to keep things moving _somehow_!" ---- "Who was that?" Ukyou wondered. "Nevermind! I'm glad SOMEone asked the question. The reason why I'm here is because, Saotome Genma, I found out the _real_ reason you left me by the side of the road that day ten years ago!" All eyes went to Genma. He paled, so much that it appeared that he was dying of shock. "I-I-I-I don't know wh-wh-what your talking ab-b-b--" *CLANG!* "Own up, Genma!" Ukyou interrupted, her Spatula again on his head. *RIP!* "The real reason that Ran-chan doesn't remember the choice between me and Okonomiyaki is because you never gave him the choice in the first place!" "Genma..." Nodoka glared. "That's not true!" Genma denied. "If Ranma had chosen you, I'd--" "--leave me by the side of the road anyway!" finished Ukyou. "So why bother in the first place? You made up that story to pin the blame on your own son so that I wouldn't discover the _real_ reason why you would never let our engagement become valid! No, better to have Ran-chan jilt me..." "And what is the real reason?" asked Nodoka. Ukyou glanced at Ranma. Seeing him nod, she took a deep breath and let it out. "Because..." she started, voice choking on her words, "...because I'm the bastard child of Kuonji Otsuko and Saotome Genma!" "WHAAAT?!" Everyone went into Takahashi position #1126. Ukyou nodded. "It's true. My mother's husband is not my father. He's sterile, see. They had tried for years to have children, unsuccessfully. When I was born, my father was estatic, thinking that I was his. He never knew the truth. "However, my mother decided that it was time that _I_ knew the truth. She told me that her husband couldn't possibly be my father, and she told me about certain OTHER people in her life. She told me about an old fling that had married another; she had met that other again one weekend and fanned their old flame for old-time's sake, and then separated again that morning and went back to their loved ones..." Ukyou chuckled dryly. "And that would've been the end of it if she had not become pregnant. My mother told her husband that it was his, but she knew in her heart that it was another man's. That man was Saotome Genma. She kept that secret for six years. "Then I fell in love with Ranma, and told Dad about my affections for him. He struck a deal with Genma, giving me to him with the cart as a dowry, but he knew that he could never allow me to be Ranma's wife; because he remembered a certain encounter six years earlier with an old girlfriend. "I was the fruit of your forbidden passion, Father! I'm forbidden passion fruit!" (SD-Rimmer: 'Ow many toes you got? :) Ukyou said trium-phantly, stabbing her finger at Genma. "So my original suspicion was right!" To think that Ranma and Ukyou... Akane blushed. "Juicy..." Nabiki smiled. "You've got some life in you yet, Saotome-ojisan." "Anata, how could you?" Nodoka reached for her katana. She seemed both on the verge of tears and of flying into a berzerker rage. "I've said before, and I'll say it again; nothing he does surprises me anymore..." Ranma stated. "I guess this means our engagement is over." "Don't worry, Ucchan," Ranma grinned. "You're still my best friend. You always were." "And now we're family." Ukyou smiled. "Anata, we're gonna have a long talk." "Oh, Saotome-kun!" *sniff* "Why did you torture your little girl for so long? Why did you allow us to think that Ukyou and Ranma would marry?" *HONK!* "There there, Otousan. Let it all out." "Hmmm, I wonder how much yen I can squeeze out of this..." (Telephone: *RING!*RING!*) "I'll get it." "Honey, put the katana away please... Surely we can discuss this like rational human beings." "I had better be good, Anata... and don't call me Sirley." "Ukyou, it's for you." "Thanks, Akane-chan." *BOOM!* "RANMA! HOW DARE YOU BETRAY YOUR FIANCE, YOU TWO TIMER!!" "Woah, Ryouga! It's not like that, see..." "Enough with your lies! In the name of the Moon, I shall punish you!" "Ryouga-kun! Stop! He didn't do anything!" *BASH!*BANG!*BONK!*CRASH!* "WAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!! My beautiful home!" Akane and Nabiki opened umbrellas to shield themselves from a sudden downpour. Kasumi smiled from under the hood of her poncho. "Ryouga-kun, you can play with Ranma-kun in the dojo." "THIS AIN'T PLAYIN'!" yelped Ranma as he dodged Ryouga's umbrella. "Watch out for that vase, you two..." *CRASH!*tinkle*tinkle* "Oh my!" "Ukyou?" Akane said, looking at a very distraught Ukyou standing in the doorframe. Her eyes danced with tears. "D-Dad overheard when I was talking to Mom..." she choked. "He's disowned me." She fell to the ground, sobbing. "Ukyou..." "RANMA! YOU DARE IGNORE ME?!! DIE!" Nodoka turned back to Genma, her scowl very hot with rage. Not to mention disappointment. "Anata, look at what your foolish- ness and irresponsibility has done to your daughter!" Ryouga was distracted from Ranma's fight. "DAUGHTER?!" "Yeah Ryouga, you blockhead! I just found out that Genma has been fooling around!" Ranma said conversationally as he kicked Ryouga into the wall. "To coin a phrase: 'RYOUGA! YOU DARE IGNORE ME?!! DIE!'" "You've dodged this issue long enough, Anata," Nodoka contin- ued. "Do the honorable thing, or you shall destroy our family as you have done to the Kuonjis!" Genma swallowed as he thought about how sharp Nodoka's katana was... Ukyou stood in front of the gates of Furinkan staring at the yard. There was no reason to stay here, but there was no reason to go back to her original family. She thought of how it was nice of Nodoka to accept her into the Saotomes. She was nice, not unlike her own mother. And once she was disowned, Genma clamed her (with some prodding from his wife). "Yen for your thoughts," a voice came from behind. Ukyou nearly jumped out of her skin. "Ran-chan! You scared the living heck out of me!" she gasped. "Sorry, wasn't thinking." "You do that alot," teased Ukyou. Ranma snorted annoyedly. "So what were you thinking about?" "Oh, about my new family..." she said. Ranma nodded. "It's funny," she continued, "I always expected to become part of your family, but not like this." "Does that disappoint you?" Ukyou smiled. "A little. But now I will always be by you, and there's nothing Akane can do to change that." "RANMA NO BAKA!!! COME BACK HERE AND TRY MY FOOD LIKE A MAN!" Akane shouted from across the field. Ranma turned an interesting shade of green. "Um, you wouldn't happen to have an okonomiyaki on you, do you?" "Sorry," she shrugged. "RATS! Catch you later!" Ranma shouted as he took off with Akane in pursuit with bento and mallet. Ukyou smiled again. She would never be his bride, her parent- age made sure of that. But at least she still had her best friend. That would be enough. ENDE ---- The Author looked at the story carefully. He felt like there was something missing. "AHA!!" ---- EPILOGUE: "RAN-CHAN!!" Ranma and Ukyou turned to the source of the call and saw a cute girl dressed in an intricate kimono. She carried a bowl in her hand full of ramen. "At last I have found you!!" the girl cheered and rushed toward him. "We're engaged to be married, you and I!" "POP! THIS HAD BETTER NOT BE ANOTHER ONE OF YOUR FORBIDDEN PASSION FRUIT!" he yelled into the sky. Genma popped out of nowhere.com and said, very calmly, "Sorry boy, you're on your own, this time." He went back the way he came. "Um... What's your name, anyway?" Ukyou asked. "What's it to you, girl?" "I'm his half-sister, so there!" Ukyou sniffed. "Actually, I kinda like to know that, too." The girl smiled. "Welllll... You used to call me Yu-chan!" "YU-CHAN!!" Ranma's eyes bugged out. "Didn't I have ANY male childhood friends?!" "And what's more, we're engaged!" Yuri giggled. "WHAT?!" Ranma yelped. "ENGAGED?!" Akane fumed. Ukyou smiled. "Here we go again!" THE REAL ENDE ------------------------------------------------------------------ Well, that's it! My first fanfic.
