The state of C&C on the FFML:
By David C. Yi (C)'96 ;)
(Check all that apply :) Some choices are half-true, some plain silly,
as well as a few that I'm quite serious about.
1. I read __% of the stories on this ML
[ ] 99
[X ] 10
[ ] 1
[ ] .1
[ ] There's stories among all that spam?
2. I C&C __% of the stories on this ML
[ ] 99
[ ] 10
[ ] 1
[X ] .1
[ ] 0
[ ] What's C&C?
3. I can't C&C because
[X ] I have a job that requires me to work 80+ hrs/wk
[ ] I have a 2400 baud modem
[ ] The 'fic is too good for me to mess up with my C&C
[ ] The 'fic is so bad that it is not worth the electrons it is stored on [ ]
my grammar stinks [ ] I have no ideas to contribute [ ] I got a brain
operation recently [ ] The warden won't let me get email
4. I think that C&C should be
[ ] Positive comments only
[ ] Negative comments only
[X ] Both positive and negative
[ ] Consist only of "it's great" or "it sucks"
[ ] Email requesting the previous parts
[ ] Email wanting to know when the rest of it will come out
[X ] Include grammar & spelling checks
[X ] Include comments on plots and ideas
[ ] Something you can buy at a supermarket
5. I gave C&C in the form of
[ ] Positive comments only
[ ] Negative comments only
[X ] Both positive and negative ones
[ ] Only saying what's wrong, but without telling how to fix it,
leaving the author to rack his/her brains on the keyboard
[ ] "it's great" or "it sucks"
[X ] Another 'fic
[ ] Quoting an entire story to get my one line CC in
[ ] An thorough review, from grammar/spelling to plot/ideas
[ ] A preprocessed, canned product
6. I have posted several stories and got
[ ] 10+ CC's per fic
[ ] ~5 CC's per fic
[X ] 1 CC per fic
[ ] Only CC of the type "it's great" or "it sucks"
[ ] Only CC of the type wanting to know where the rest of it is
[ ] Crickets chirping in the background
7. If you didn't get 5+ CC's, was your story of the type:
[ ] Obscure anime no one has heard of (except for you)
[ ] Check if you assumed that everyone knew about it and therefore
didn't bother putting in adequate background material.
[ ] Self-insertion where you are the most powerful chracter and you
go around on a power-trip bashing evildoers back to the pit of
doom that they come from and tie up all loose plot ends into a
nice, neat bowtie.
[ ] Check here if you finished it in less than 5KB
[ ] That had annoying word-wrap and/or ascii-fied special characters
e.g. '=20' , '=92' , etc
[ ] Too small a part of the whole story, e.g. <1/20 of a story for a
100KB+ story, ~5KB for shorter stories
[ ] Eh, I have to post a story first?
Ummmm...how do crossovers w/original characters fit in on this list?
8. If it is a Ranma 'fic and you got <5 CC's, was your story of the type: [ ]
Author enters Ranma-verse, becomes all-powerful and proceeds to
solve all problems.
[ ] Shampoo uses another mind-control drug on Ranma (personally, I think
that this drug-use is a fanfic thing. I've gone through all of the
anime synopses (a while ago), and only once did she use a magic
fungus, but then I could be wrong)
[ ] Ranma gets yet another finacee
[X ] including character(s) from the as-of-yet-un-Viz-translated manga
or anime. (E.g. Akari, whom many people are not familiar with)
[ ] Ranma and Akane have a fight, think really deeply about it,
apologize, and their parents get them married the next day
[ ] Where you have no idea what you are writing about (i.e. you have
not done your research. Watching a Viz Ranma dub is *not* enough
research. You need to check out the anime scripts/synopses,
"official" and unofficial translations of manga, FAQ's, etc)
[ ] Cheesy
[ ] Lemony
[ ] Fruit-cake
9. Whenever I read, the biggest pet-peeve is:
[ ] Unfinished story (*ahem*)
[X ] Annoying formatting
[X ] So long, that you need to pull an all-nighter to read it
[X ] Check if it is so funny that your neighbors complain about
your laughter ... not really a peeve, but the neighbors are :)
[X ] Generic plot with characters flatter than a pancake run over by a
Mack truck
[ ] Spelling/grammar mistakes
10. I would C&C more if:
[ ] The story presented is complete, or at least contains a self-
contained plot thread
[X ] The story weren't binhexed/mimed/uuencoded
[ ] The story weren't written in script format
[ ] The story wasn't so good
[ ] I get a faster modem to replace my 300 baud-er
[X ] I ever finish reading 30MB of backlogged stories :)
[ ] A la Nabiki (i.e. I were paid to do it)
[X ] I were threatened by an Arab terrorist waving a lit stick of
dynamite in front of my face
11. Despite the spam, I'm still subscribed because:
[X ] To have a good read once in a while
[X ] To remind yourself that you too can go on an ego-trip in public :)
[ ] To learn all of the write techniques from the masters ;)
[X ] To plag ... er ... gain new ideas and insight for own projects
[X ] To get cool stories before RAAC does, especially looooong series
(You could say that your computer has a serial port ... :)
[ ] I can't get the list to unsubscribe me
[ ] If I unsubscribed, I'd be getting no mail
[ ] So I can brag to my friends about how much mail I get
[X ] I have no life; so much so, that I'm getting an IP address for my
coffin.
