  Officially, Oz is an english speaking country. Many non-ozzies
may dispute this.  As well as a distinctive accent, ozzies have a
unique slang which caan be almost incomprehensible to those that havnt
heard it before.

  Abbreviation is very common in Australian speech. Many colloqual
terms are abbreviated or diminutive forms of more common words. The
most common way to do it is by adding "ie" or "y" or "o" to the end of
word (if the word has more than one syllable, then some should be
dropped). Thus a can of beer is a "tinnie", mosquitoes are "mozzies",
a barbecue is "barbie" and (this is extreme but not uncommon) christmas
presents are "chrissie prezzies".  Afternoon is "arvo". Professional
interest groups of peopl are often abbreviated: Motorcycle riders are
bikies, surfers are surfies, dock workers are wharfies, truck drivers
are truckies, enviromentalists are greenies.

  A persons name can also be abbreviated by close assoctiates. As with
other words trailing syllables are dropped in favor of "y" or more
often an "o". David will become Davo, Jack will become Jacko, rather than
Davy and Jacky.  This habit is not limited amongst friends, often
prominent people like politiciands are refered to like this by
newspaper headlines.
