I do not want to start another thread of spam based on this, I just
want an answer. Is this ML truly for all authors, or just the few that
are very well known?
Yes, it is truly for all authors. But the list has it's problems and we
are only human. We all have authors we like and will read no matter what
they post. I wouldn't say that I am a well known author though I post
fic regularly. I do get an average of 5 pieces of C&C on whatever I
post. It is much higher if it is a Ranma based fic. Most of it is
private.
O.K. I've been here since the ML started and these are a few of the
things I have noticed...
The amount of C&C you get will depend upon a lot of things.
The spam content currently running on the list. Lots of spam, very few
C&C on anything.
Also, what you write about. Straight Ranma gets the most C&C. BGC and
Sailor Moon run second. Anything else, well, feel lucky if you get any
C&C at all. I try to respond to first fic attempts (yes, I am reading
yours, Zen...so far, I like...) but will admit I fall into the above
trap. If it's not a series (or crosses over into a series) I'm not
familiar with and the story/writting style doesn't reach out and grab
me, I don't read it. And that seems true for the rest of the list. I am
incredibly fortunate to have a small core of loyal readers for my
current series and I appreciate each and every one of them very much.
(Thanks again, guys! ^_^)
If you yourself C&C. If you C&C on an authors work, that author will
normally return the favor. Though for authors who are currently
writting, this runs into a time problem. It does for me at least. I have
a very narrow time slot for the ML and my own writing and a detailed C&C
takes a lot of time, so unless I have something to 'really' offer, I
just drop a 'rave'. One thing about 'raves'. They might not be helpful,
but at least they let the author know you are reading the work and
appreciating thier efforts.
Most of the population of this list are here just to read. ((um...just
readers/lurkers...it would be nice to hear from you every now and then.
Even a private 'loved it...hated it' will help. And as you can see, many
of the authors (including me) are rabid for any feedback. Don't be shy
and don't think that your comments will be ignored or are 'not educated'
enough, worthy, stupid, whatever...))
So I guess I'm trying to say guys is don't be discouraged by your lack
of feedback. It happens. And going back to your first compliant, yes, it
does seem that until you get a 'rep' the C&C most prob. will be sparse.
It doesn't mean the stories aren't being read. Don, that you got
requests for Chrono Trigger 1/2 is a good sign. It means that there was
a good interest in it, neh?
Same goes for me. I've asked this question a long time ago, and I'll
ask again. What do one have to get response on his story?
Plead, pester, maybe throw a temper tantrum or two. Sometimes this
works. Sometimes it doesn't. *shrug*
...recently told me about that there is a lot of mediocore to bad fanfic
that are posted quite often. I think that our job as the FFML is to let
them know this. If I'm one of this mediocore or bad authors, let me
know so I can work on improving my story. All in all, a lot of C & C
does a lot of help, some C & C does some help, and no C & C does no help
to an author whatsoever.
Bravo! Come on folks! Help these guys out, O.K? ^_^
Laters.
