Kamusta! :)
Here's part 7 of my sis' fanfic!

Seven.
Hiei braced himself, sword-hand at the ready. There were, he realized, not
just one giant scorpion in the glade, but three. And it was a small glade,
barely able to accommodate a bout between him and even one of the titanic
creatures. He had to be the one to strike first, and he had to strike
quickly, for he was in danger of being placed in a tight position.
He drew his steel sword and lunged for one of the scorpions. To his
surprise, it watched him approach, and did not move. It did not move – but
it promptly disappeared as his blade came beyond an inch away from certain
destruction. Hiei looked round sharply. The other two scorpions had shown
their skull-like faces in the glade, and were scrabbling for him.
He swept his sword in a vicious arc when they were near enough. But the
blade did not touch more than the forest’s dense air. There was not even
wind. Hiei only heard his heart’s quickened beating as the creatures
disappeared.
What’s happening? He was alone in the glade, and yet he felt overwhelmed by
some army, some invisible troop. What are these things? There was a very
slight whizzing sound behind him. But what alarmed him was the disturbance
in the air, that he felt with the skin at the back of his neck.
Something was about to bear down! He leapt out of its way, and the ground
his feet had rested on exploded.
There was a large hole in the sand that was quickly filled up by the grit
scattered by gigantic spider-legs shuffling. Hiei sensed that he was being
cornered. Out of impulse he leapt high up into the air, and saw from above
the ground he had been standing on fall out like the dregs of an hourglass.
The invisible scorpions’ prime weapons were their tails. One swished its
tail and knocked over three sturdy trees, swished it back and swept behind
it a thick dust trail. But they were earthbound. Hiei could easily kill
them from the branches, if he only knew where to strike, for the spider-legs
the skull-faces, armor, and lethal stingers were supported on were quick.
In the middle of his jump he arched his spine, and reached for a high tree
branch nearby. Upon firmly holding on to it, he swung until he was securely
perched. He was certain he had been spotted, though. He had hardly a few
seconds to think of what to make of the situation.
As he thought, he saw something flash on the forest floor. One of the
scorpions had become visible! But that was only for the briefest of
moments, to be caught by the swiftest of eyes. So the scorpions couldn’t
just become invisible, Hiei mused. They had their time, and then they had
to show themselves for a split-second. I don’t need my jagan. That
knowledge alone should be enough. At that instant, the tree he was settled
on shook violently once, and started to topple. Hiei leapt deftly for
another branch, upon another tree farther from the glade.
He wondered how Kurama was doing.
The rose whip drew them off, but did not harm them. Their little legs were
swift, cunning. Animal leers reflected their mindless brutality.
Kurama knew he was overwhelmed by these monkey-like creatures that seemed to
have as much control over plant life as he did. But of course, they were
not youko. He knew from the start what they were: goblins, brainless
beasts, lower creatures living only to eat and breed and kill. They were
youko-derived, as the stories of his childhood went. They were an
experiment gone wrong. They had extensive control over plant life, but
barely any idea how to use it. Few goblins are born with the sense enough
to trap a foe with it, let alone trap a meal.
Unfortunately for Kurama, one of those few was a member of the pack he
faced. Round leaves from the branches of the tall tree he stood under
stiffened and fell like rain. They buried themselves in the earth about his
feet, like blades.
He looked around him, at the devil-faces of little youko-children twisted
and pulled to a protective grimace. None of the grimaces held a sign of
intelligence, or mischief, at the very least. The goblins chattered and
jumped about gleefully. It was enough to make one sick.
At last Kurama deigned to kill one of the irritating savages. Perhaps the
sight would frighten them. Heck, the worst that could happen was that it
would make them more aggressive, Kurama thought, as he lashed out. And then
the worst happened.
The pack of goblins had merely been sizing him up. They had a further,
vital taste of his potential when he killed one of them. They jumped upon
him all at once, and the rose whip drank greedily of youkai blood, but there
always seemed to be too many of them and the shadows seemed to grow around
the only being of light in that part of the wood…
