I've tried downloading the fanfics at the ftp archive, but every time I do
they come out garbled because they're all in gz format. So I've tried
getting them by mail through the ftpmail service, but every time I make a
request I get a message back saying that the anime fan works directory and
any file I request don't exist. Does anyone on the ML know how to do

Just get a Gzip decoder.

Stuffit Works as well for the IBM.  It handles .GZ and several other odd 
compression styles.
