   though, aren't really my forte.

Then don't write up the battles!

You've got more than enough plot, character interactions, etc. for a
good story (for a samurai *epic*); just limit your descriptions of the
battle to a brief "illustration" or two.  Have you read any of
W.E.B. Griffin's military fiction?  It's 99% people, their
interactions, institutions and traditions, preparing for
operations/battles, etc.  The battles themselves are deliberate
afterthoughts, with very little of the books' budget devoted to them.

And anyway, in a non-visual medium like Internet fanfic, fight/battle
prose is almost never done well, at least compared to what manga and
anime can do.

   B) As you said, that adds yet ANOTHER dimension to write.

Unless you're going to make this humorous, there's not much point in
including the curses, and this it too tragic a work for that.
