Ok, source is the 'Amber' books by Roger Zelazny.  In these books, *every*
reality is merely a reflection or a 'Shadow' of Amber, The True City,
distorted by the Courts of Chaos. 

The power behind Amber is the Unicorn/Pattern, which continually fights the 
Serpent/Logrus for total control of the infinite number of shadows which 
are actually stresses caused by their combat.  The Pattern symbolises 
Order, while the Logrus symbolises Chaos, or entropy.  This is where 
Kergma comes in.

Kergma can be described as an intelligent mathematical abstraction of 
Chaos itself, with a few personality quirks (hence the 'Trickster' ;) )

Powers include reality changing (including formshifting), shadow traveling
and Logrus magic ;) Full extent of powers is unknown.  Kergma is thought
to be aligned with the Logrus.  *grin*
