Hello everyone! :)
Here's part two of my sis' fanfic...

Two.
Danger was in the wind. Hiei felt something stirring in the deep, dark
heart of the human world. Sooner or later he and Kurama would be summoned
to investigate. Maybe Koenma would even let the two block-headed humans
come along. Hiei never knew beforehand, and never cared.
He stayed in Ningen Kai, near Kurama, should that need arise. Hiei knew
that sometimes Kurama felt his presence, as he flitted from tree to tree,
eyeing his youko comrade during his most idle moments, like a dark angel
keeping watch over someone special. Yes, that was what Kurama might as well
think: Hiei would be there by his side in an instant in case something went
wrong.
But until then, Hiei would keep out of sight. Perhaps Kurama sensed him
while he was abroad, but prudently kept his mouth shut. Hiei knew of the
influence of this human woman – this precious Kaasan – upon his comrade, and
he would not complicate things for Kurama by even hinting to her that he
figured in her only child’s life.
Kurama himself had forewarned Hiei, once, that his ties to the human world
were strong. His disguise as a human youth was almost as necessary to
himself as it was to the people he foolishly insisted on protecting. But
from the moment they met Hiei had been wondering, marveling at how he was
able to preserve this illusion while not losing so much of himself. Kurama
was radiant with youki, even in his human form. That was probably why he
was still so graceful…
Hiei shook his head in alarm, and cleared it. He was not – he was never –
in a position to admire someone, even a fellow fighter, for anything except
valor and skill. Of course, that was what had drawn him to Kurama from the
start, but there was something else…something he could not deny
existed…something he could not phrase.
Why did he prefer Kurama’s company to anyone else’s? Why was it that Kurama
often showed concern as to what he did and what he planned to do? Why was
it that at certain times, the red of human blood reminded him of hair, hair
long and fine and magical, flying as the rose whip descended at a deadly speed?
And why was he thinking of these things?
"Hn," he grunted, and flew off.
The treetops shivered to warn him of the newcomer’s approach. At the
precise moment, Kurama turned.
"Rose whip!" he cried, and there was a ripping sound. The dismembered head
of an intruding youkai tumbled smoothly to the ground.
The tall body swayed, staggered, then fell at Kurama’s feet. Kurama stared
down at it impassively. In its left hand it still clutched a sword of
common Makai-steel. The frame did not seem to be a strong one; rather, it
was long and sleek, more built for speed.
At the youkai’s back was a slash so deep it could have killed. And perhaps
the youkai was dead, when it came Kurama’s way. Perhaps only its legs were
working. For it didn’t even twitch as blood spilled in torrents unto the
human earth, from its neck and severed spine.
The rose whip retracted. Kurama bent to examine the slash. He realized,
after a second, that he knew of only one other swordsman who could make a
cut that fine in such a thick hide. Hiei was somewhere nearby.
Despite himself, he smiled.
He was looking up at the treetops when Hiei manifested on one of the higher
branches. The small robed figure, a brilliant black spot in the sunset,
looked down to meet his eyes. Hiei’s cold, steady gaze shifted from Kurama
to the body at his feet, then turned to Kurama again.
"It was dead before its head came off," Kurama said without provocation.
That was enough of a greeting for Hiei. He leapt from his branch to stand
before the red-haired comrade. The body of the dead youkai seemed to be all
that separated them. "I found it in the wood by your house," Hiei told him.
"It was wandering. It didn’t seem to know where it was."
"We’ve proven to be terrible hosts," Kurama said softly. "But what gateway
could this one have gone through?"
Hiei sniffed. "Nothing accidental." He crouched as if to examine the body,
too, but his gaze was not even on the stream of blood just starting to
abate. It was as if he was only trying to avoid speaking immediately to
Kurama again.
Kurama crouched in front of Hiei. Hiei looked up languidly.
"I’ve been looking for you," Kurama said. "There’s something we have to
talk about."
