Ok, I've gotten tired of having my work trashed every time I use a 
dos/windows or windows 95 machine, and am setting up a personal linux box 
in my office, so I need some questions answered.

1)  I've set up the software, so how do I upgrade the kernel after 
compiling it?  I've tried what the manuals and read me files say but it 
doesn't work.

Once you recompile the kernel - you should looking in ...um... 
/directory_where_you_compiled_it/arch/i386/image  (NOTE- I'm reaching into
my cobwebbed head - this is not the exact directory - look for something
like this!!!)  Find zImage or vmlinux or vmlinuz  This needs to be moved to
where your current zImage/vmlinux/vmlinuz kernel is (AFTER BACKING UP THE
ORIGINAL KERNEL)  Then simply rerun lilo (which I assume you are using, as
do most Linux people)

That's all the help I can give right now.

2)  How do I set up a ppp connection over a phone line?  I have no idea 
how to write programs or scripts, I usually let someone else do it.  (As 
you can probably guess, I have no computer experience other than writing 
bad <proofreaders comment:  REALLY BAD > fiction.

Grr.... I won't discuss that last line...  
HOWEVER - if you look in /usr/docs/faq (I believe) you might have a bunch of
FAQs - one will be something like ppp.howto.

If you don't have the FAQs - try ftp.cdrom.com they have a huge linux
archive.

3)  Can anyone tell me what dip and chat are?  I don't seem to have 
manual pages for them, and I don't understand the manual pages in the 
first place.
