One.
Whatever he had on his mind shouldn’t stay there for long. Something that
robbed him of concentration was a danger – was *still* a danger, Kurama
should say, even after the Ankoku Bujutsukai. The story had not ended. It
was in the air, his youko-self could detect: there was another mission in
store for them.
He had to get rid of the tension. Or else...or else he would start finding
difficulty in coming up with excuses for Shiori – Kaasan – for not doing as
well as he used to in school. Dearest Shiori, the ever-watchful, was the
dilemma of the moment.
"Are you feeling ill, Shuiichi?" she once asked, and shyly, knowing that he
had never been ill in his life. For all the same, he was troubled lately,
as only a mother could know
Kurama smiled. "Of course not, Kaasan." Shiori laughed and reluctantly
let him be.
Lying was an art he had perfected, after five hundred years.
And after five hundred years, he had learned to look carefully inside
himself. But although he peered into the darkest corners, he could not find
what he sought. He could only determine *what it was* he sought.
He had a problem. It had a name: Hiei.
He didn’t know what to do with it, and it stung him. Damn, it was like the
way it started out with Kaasan, all the confusion...something was happening
– or had just happened – inside, after all that time.
He had known Hiei for six human years. Through everything that had taken
place in that long span of time, they had been – what, allies? Friends?
Can either of them admit it? But the thought of Hiei disturbed him again,
as it had not done since the day they first met.
"Eh, you just miss him," Yusuke snorted, as he wolfed down his ramen.
Even if Yusuke did not have an answer ready, Kurama still found his company
pleasant (or amusing, at the very least). Yusuke almost seemed unaffected
by his recent missions. He was the same hotheaded creature who didn’t try
to answer anything he didn’t have to.
Kurama watched the Urameshi boy pig out, chin on fist, smiling
ostentatiously. He waited until the split-second wherein Yusuke’s mouth was
not full, and then asked, "But you’re certain you have no news?"
"News," Yusuke mumbled. "Um, right...a friend of mine has been to your
school a while ago..."
"Not that kind of news," Kurama said quietly, almost grimly.
"Heh-heh," Yusuke grinned. "You’re pretty much in demand about your place,
aren’t you? And not just because of your brains. Seems a good percentage
of all the girls in your school has something for you, *Shuiichi*, and the
rest haven’t seen your pretty face yet. How do you do it?"
"What? Be popular?" Kurama sipped his tea. "For starters, Urameshi, I
don’t beat people up, I don’t swear much, I don’t smoke..."
"In other words, you don’t act like me. Yeah, yeah." Yusuke’s grin didn’t
show any clear signs of going. "I’ve never been to your school, Kurama. I
haven’t seen you in action, let’s say. But I just don’t get it. I mean, it
shouldn’t be in your looks..."
"My looks?" This one made Kurama smile with genuine interest.
"Your looks," Yusuke slurred, as if someone could actually get drunk on tea
and ramen, even on that rich side of the country. "I seriously didn’t know
that girls fell for guys who look like one of them."
"Really?" Kurama’s youthful fox-eyes gleamed. "How could you possibly miss
it? Girls all over the world are falling head over heels over bishonen."
"Like you?"
Kurama wanted to answer that, to laugh back, at least, but the real object
of their conversation returned to sober him. "We were talking about Hiei,"
he said quietly, and hid his discomfort by looking down at the cup about to
touch his lips again.
Yusuke thought he must have overstepped his bounds. Even Kurama’s
mischievous spirit had its tolerance level, he figured. He would have to
learn to be more discreet. "I’d heard from Botan that he was wandering
about near your place," he answered eventually. "He’s still in Ningen Kai.
Though for what, I can’t imagine."
Kurama’s delicate brow furrowed. "Yukina’s safely back in the Snow Realm,
isn’t she?"
"So far as I know," Yusuke shrugged. "Maybe what he’s up to only matters to
himself. We never know about that guy." He leaned back and sighed happily,
free of care, as Kurama had expected him to be, despite the circumstances.
"That was good stuff," he remarked. "Didn’t fill me, though."
Kurama ordered another bowl of ramen.
"A *lot* better than Keiko’s cooking," Yusuke mumbled, as he started on his
second bowl.
Kurama leaned forward. "I’m thinking of visiting him," he said in almost a
whisper, "and not just because I want to see him again. I feel – I *know* –
that we’re about to face up to something again. Something big."
"I’d bet," Yusuke belched. "Toguro didn’t even faze me. Hah!"
Suddenly Kurama didn’t feel up to discussing anything with Yusuke. He let
the poor thing rant on about how easy defeating the Toguro team had been,
and smiled at the proper moments. He didn’t say anything more. Anything
else would not have belonged to the situation.
Hiei’s name turned over and over in his mind.
