Actually, the pronounciation is more of a cross between "L" and "R" (as well as 
"D") than it is towards either one.  If anything, a lot of non-Japanese tend to 
distinguish themselves as such by their pronouciation of "R".

It's romanization that trips things up, and standard romanization schemes tend 
to lean heavily towards "R".
