At the end of the rather, um, large batch of C&C I did last time, I wrote
that anyone I forgot should let me know. Well, they let me know, alright.
Here's the first of the two I forgot.
One Bad Day, by Cynewulf
This is a hard one to classify. It's not a sadfic, though it isn't
happy....It isn't a surreal piece, nor is it a relationship piece...and it
sure isn't a lemon. But it is pretty good.
The story opens with Akane coming across a rather distraught and absent
Ranma. They talk, and we discover that Ranma's had a truely bad
day...nothing earthshattering, just the last straw...and is rethinking his
life.
The prose is elegant and well polished, and the author does a good job
of portraying his character's feelings. The dialogue is well done, and the
best part of the story...although Ranma's speech was a bit too casual at
times; he "Yo, Akane!"d enough to make Rocky proud. ;)
It's a dialogue piece, heavy on talking and low on action. In many
ways, these are the hardest types to write; it's more difficult to make it
work than a action fic. This one succeeds.
Reminded me of several other fics. The beginning was eerily similiar to
"Who's Life is it Anyway?", and much of the main body was reminisent of
"A Man I'll Never Be" and one other who's name eludes me at the moment...
Still, very clearly an original work. (As much as a fanfic can be
original, anyway. ;)
I'll be looking for more from the author. (Psst! Finish the
Normal/Exciting life series!)
Tomorrow - We cover the other one I left out, Don Wang's Chrono Trigger
1/2.
