   continuity because...".  Akane did this when she talked about her
   cooking, and Ukyou's fourth line also did this.  Better to have
   Ranma ask, or to have Ranma figure it out, or to have it come up in
   some other way.

I agree it's a bit silly, but I *really* liked those bits, and given
what's really happening in the story it's not unreasonable.
