Since my faithful computer was in the shop for most of the past week,
I'm afraid I haven't had time to read and critique the neverending flood
of fics we get. And I'm too damn lazy to do all of them together, so....
here they are in one big bundle. Hey, it worked for Marisa Price....
The Ways of the Amazons - TIL - Aftermath, by R. Lawson
Hooray, he chose the neat one to write about! Overall, very well done.
Lawson's style is fairly unique for fanfiction - heavy on dialogue and
emotion, low on comedy and improbables. In fact, no one hits anyone else
in the entire fic; definitely odd for Ranma.
The story follows Shampoo and Mousse (Sorry, Xian Pu and Mu Zhu) and
their return to the Joketsuzoku, where they must explain how Cologne met
her fate. But Lawson's China isn't the circa '20 Kuomintang playground
that we see in the manga and anime - no, this is Red China.
Suffice it to say, it ends happily. Shampoo goes off to Beijing as a
representitive, relationships are furthered, and Ranma is accused of sexism
by 30000-year-old dead Amazons. A worthy addition to the TIL line,
although anti-fans of the Chinese Government might not like the end.
Gosunkugi's Story, by Piccolo
A "near-future" story from Gos's point of view, this is an overhaul of
a previous fic. Noteworthy for the odd pairings (Tofu/Ukyo?
Kasumi/Mousse?), which lack any explaination. Gos remains in the role of
weird voodoo oddball villain, and doesn't really grow or change much. Not
surprising, seeing as how he's always been pretty 2-D.
The monologue style is excellent, rather reminicient of a stage play,
and the fic has several funny moments. However, the dialogue is rather
stilted, the characters walking the line of OOC, and therelationships
rather unconvicing. Not bad for a first fic; but it needs support.
Sleepover 1 & 2, by PhoneyNT
Phoney's fics aren't IC. They don't contain character development, the
dialogue isn't great, the taste is questionable, and the emotions
cardboard. But they are funny.
The plot has Shampoo, Ukyo, and Akane sleep overat the dojo, annoy
Ranma, and become the victim of a elaborate practical joke. It's not
entirely clear if Ranma knows exactly what his prank looks like from the
outside....poor Soun.
The second part covers the aftermath of the joke, and shows why you
never want Kasumi to displine you.
The entire fic, especially part 2, walks the fine line of lemon. The
entire thing (like most of Phoney's stuff) is in rather bad taste; if
Kunchan were a volume of fine erotic poetry, Phoney would be the "101 Sex
Jokes" book.
Not bad, but very much depends on the reader's taste.
Yin Yang, by Lucas Muzzatti
I'm still not sure about why the author named the thing the way he did,
but hey, I've only seen Part 1. (What that it, or did I hit the D key a
bit too quickly?) It follows a rather old fanfic formula - Wandering
martial artist(s), often Gaijin, often cursed, show up at the dojo to
train.
Not to say that it's bad....what I read was well-written and had some
rather memorable bits. (Nabiki with the toothbrush stuck in my head for
some reason) But readers might feel as though they've read this story
before.
Too early for me to really give an opinion. Watch the spelling ("Sound"
Tendo?) and send out the next bits soon.
Akane Gets Kidnapped. . .again. , by Plunger
I'm still laughing. Loved it.
The fic is a satire on the plot element consantly overused by not only
us humble fic artists, but by the Great Takahashi herself. And it's a very
good one. Lacks the slightly vindictive edge that Peter's Journey and The
Fic For You! had; not surprising considering the different target.
Since the plot of the story is what the fic is making fun of, I won't
go into it. The title sums it up, really. Though the GCV is a nice touch.
:)
Much, much more fun than a LomanFic. Though that's just me.
Sequence, by Scott K. Jamison
A what-if story, the fic has Ranma buy the customary piece of cursed
jewelry from a vendor, and make the customary "I-wish-I-hadn't..." wish.
This time, the wish is that he didn't have all these girls chasing him.
Wham, he wakes up having been a girl from birth. And engaged to Kuno. And
Ryoga. And Mousse. And Tsubasa. And Ukyo?
Sadly, the fic ends just as it begins to get interesting. That annoyed
me a bit; it felt like the author had gotten tired of writing the story
and had quickly wrapped it up.
Ranma takes his situation with rather un-Ranmalike calm.
Enjoyable, but I finished it feeling a bit irked at the sudden cutoff.
*sigh of relief* Well, that's done....let me know if I missed anybody. No
Sailor Moon, please.
