Hey, reading this request again, I just thought of one possible source of
info.  Rumiko Takahashi's short sotry manga "One Hundred Years of Love" from
the Rumic Theater compilation has scenes from both a traditional sanatarium
and a modern Japanese hospital.  The Rumic Theater volume has been released
by Viz in English, so you might be able to find a copy for sale somewhere...
